{"id":780213,"date":"2026-07-05T08:26:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T08:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/780213\/"},"modified":"2026-07-05T08:26:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T08:26:17","slug":"patrick-ewing-joins-wizards-staff-as-an-assistant-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/780213\/","title":{"rendered":"Patrick Ewing joins Wizards staff as an assistant coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Patrick Ewing is returning to coaching after serving as an ambassador for the Knicks the last two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>The legendary center who remains one of the greatest Knicks players ever \u2014 present throughout their recent championship run and parade, too \u2014 has joined the Wizards staff as an assistant coach, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShamsCharania\/status\/2073559736927019208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to a Saturday ESPN report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ewing previously served as the head coach for Georgetown \u2014 his alma mater \u2014 from 2017-23, leading the Hoyas to a Big East Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021 before winning 13 games combined across the next two seasons and getting fired.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39891251\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2026-madison-square-garden-new-132220846.jpg\" alt=\"Patrick Ewing smiles at the camera before the NBA Finals game.\" class=\"wp-image-39891251\"  \/>Patrick Ewing is pictured during a June 8 game. NBAE via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Then, in October 2024, Ewing returned to the Knicks as a \u201cbasketball ambassador assisting both basketball and business operations,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/04\/sports\/patrick-ewing-back-with-knicks-organization-after-24-years-apart\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">team announcement at the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I said the day my number 33 lifted in the rafters at MSG, I will always be a Knick and I will always be a New Yorker,\u201d Ewing said in a statement at the time. \u201cI can\u2019t wait to get started in this new position and to officially be back with the organization that I love so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That meant Ewing became a central figure again more than two decades after his 15-year tenure in New York City ended with 11 All-Star Game nods and plenty of playoff heartbreak.<\/p>\n<p>In his two years back with the Knicks, they advanced to the Eastern Conference finals before falling to the Pacers and then won the championship \u2014 with their recent run to the title fueled by a 13-game winning streak.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.50146628;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39891254\" width=\"886\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/new-york-knicks-alumni-patrick-116681871.jpg\" alt=\"Patrick Ewing giving a thumbs up.\" class=\"wp-image-39891254\"  \/>Patrick Ewing is pictured during a December 2025 Knicks game. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Before the Finals series against the Spurs began, Ewing <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/16\/sports\/patrick-ewing-about-feeling-a-part-of-knicks-run-after-pain-of-near-misses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told The Post\u2019s Steve Serby<\/a> that he felt \u201clike I\u2019m a part of it\u201d because of the Knicks ensuring that former players are back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I would tell them is they have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,\u201d Ewing, who fell short in the 1994 and 1999 NBA Finals, told Serby about what his message would be to the Knicks before the ultimate series. \u201cNo one knows if it\u2019s going to come back around.
