There is a fair bit here to annoy those obsessed with the way Netflix allegedly nudges all its franchises towards the “woke” – as revealed in the final episode, the black British actor Sharon Duncan-Brewster plays a female Moriarty – but that is not the only reason to recommend Enola Holmes 3. Brown is at her best as a gently feminist action hero. The stunts are cool. The set dressing is lovely. All four actors master poisonous set pieces in the comedy of unease. One might, if picking nits, complain that the social dynamics don’t shift quite as much as they could. But this remains a drinks-bash-from-hell classic in the vein of Abigail’s Party or Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Nobody would like to be at such a party. Everyone loves hearing about them. Starring Matt Johnson, Jay McCarrol, Jared Raab, Ben Petrie. 15A cert, gen release, 101 min

In this gleefully unpunctuated entertainment, Johnson and McCarrol revive the semi-fictionalised versions of themselves from their cult web series, in which two Toronto musicians devote years to securing a booking at the Rivoli, a popular Toronto venue. Johnson films the action in the same freewheeling documentary style as the series, mixing hidden-camera encounters featuring unsuspecting members of the public with increasingly ambitious set pieces. The result preserves the scrappy, improvised amiability while expanding it into a diabolically clever comedy, poignantly pivoting around two chums as they confront the distance between youthful certainty and middle age. G cert, gen release, 90 min

Following on from 2022’s poor Minions: The Rise of Gru, Minions & Monsters puts the Illumination’s irrepressible rabble right where they belong: in Hollywood’s silent era. Rich in visual invention, this seventh entry from the Despicable Me sequence is easily one of the franchise’s most entertaining entries. Pierre Coffin, directing, while again providing the voices of every single Minion, leans heavily into the characters’ roots in slapstick. The result is packed with affectionate nods to pre-Hays Code Hollywood while also finding room for playful references to Singin’ in the Rain, Jaws, The Blob and The Matrix.
