Upset of the year: Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje<\/p>\n
UFC Freedom 250 \u2014 June 14, 2026<\/p>\n
This was not the biggest upset of the year strictly in terms of betting odds.<\/p>\n
But in terms of optics, stakes, shock value and historical importance, Justin Gaethje defeating Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250<\/a> is the clear pick.<\/p>\n Gaethje entered the fight as a +480 underdog, and plenty of people \u2014 myself included \u2014 thought he was going to get knocked out on the White House lawn in the biggest fight of his life.<\/p>\n Instead, \u201cThe Highlight\u201d proved everyone wrong.<\/p>\n Topuria entered the fight as the undefeated Lightweight champion, a two-division titleholder and, in the eyes of many, the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He had just knocked out Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira in consecutive fights. He looked untouchable.<\/p>\n Then Gaethje did what Gaethje does.<\/p>\n He weathered the early storm, survived a brutal second round and then slowly broke Topuria down until the champion\u2019s corner stopped the fight before the fifth round (watch highlights<\/a>).<\/p>\n It was violent. It was dramatic. It was historic.<\/p>\n And best of all, Gaethje finally became an undisputed UFC Lightweight champion after years of being one of the most beloved action fighters in the sport.<\/p>\n So, no, it was not the biggest betting upset money-wise, but it was absolutely the biggest upset moment of 2026 so far.<\/p>\n Here are a few honorable mentions:<\/p>\n NEWARK, NEW JERSEY – MAY 09: Sean Strickland reacts after the UFC middleweight championship fight against Khamzat Chimaev of Russia during the UFC 328 event at Prudential Center on May 09, 2026 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Chris Unger\/Zuffa LLC)<\/p>\n Sean Strickland defied the odds and became a two-time UFC Middleweight champion by defeating Khamzat Chimaev and taking his undefeated record at UFC 328<\/a>.<\/p>\n Strickland entered as a +330 underdog and was expected by many to get mauled like basically everyone else Chimaev had fought.<\/p>\n Chimaev controlled Strickland in the first round, but after that, the fight turned into a four-round striking battle. (Photo by Chris Unger\/Zuffa LLC)<\/p>\n The biggest betting upset of 2026 so far belongs to Kevin Borjas vs. Andre Lima.<\/p>\n Lima closed as a massive -770 favorite, while Borjas came back as a +600 underdog. That is absurd.<\/p>\n But Borjas did not fight like an underdog.<\/p>\n He ended up winning a clear unanimous decision over Lima, who was viewed as one of the best unranked Flyweights in the world and had looked dominant during his UFC run.<\/p>\n It was a pretty wild upset, to be honest.<\/p>\n LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – APRIL 04: Tresean Gore reacts after a submission victory against Azamat Bekoev of Russia in a middleweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at Meta APEX on April 04, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada. On some sportsbooks, Bekoev was as high as a -800 favorite.<\/p>\n And on top of it being a massive upset, it was an awesome fight that got robbed of \u201cFight of the Night.\u201d<\/p>\n Gore entered on a two-fight losing streak and desperately needed a win.
