(ABC Wide Bay: James C Taylor)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In July 2024, Daniella suffered horrific burns while wearing a fluffy hoodie her grandmother bought as a birthday present from online retailer Temu.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-07\/temu-recall-flammable-glow-in-dark-jumper-australia-consumer-law\/104787390\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Girl suffers severe burns from Temu jumper<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Daniella Jacobs-Herd faces a decade of skin grafts after suffering severe burns from a Temu jumper purchased online, which failed to comply with Australian safety standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Four months after the incident, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.productsafety.gov.au\/search-consumer-product-recalls\/glow-in-the-dark-hooded-jumper-sold-on-temu\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Temu recalled the hoodie<\/a> for non-compliance with mandatory safety standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In June 2026, nearly two years after the incident, Temu has voluntarily signed up to the Australian Product Safety Pledge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Consumer watchdog the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said it would hold the Chinese retailer to standards of &#8220;[enhanced] transparency and accountability&#8221; beyond Australian consumer law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement, Temu said joining the voluntary pledge reinforced its commitment to product safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Joining the Australian Product Safety Pledge reinforces our ongoing efforts to strengthen product safety and compliance on the platform, building on our existing safeguards and supporting a safe online marketplace,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Orange logo of brand Temu displayed on a phone \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/28f584e1d14d7325d1c66b9a9b38bd72.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Temu has not clarified whether it or its suppliers are responsible for the safety of products sold on the platform. (Supplied: CHOICE)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But consumer advocacy group Choice said in the months before Temu joined the pledge, it found toy teethers posing a choking hazard and a novelty lighter on the platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a recent complaint to the ACCC, Choice said &#8220;a substantial volume&#8221; of unsafe products were being sold by pledge participants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The consumer watchdog later found non-compliant products including butterfly knives, gel blasters and novelty cigarettes and lighters for sale on Amazon, AliExpress and eBay.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Coloured knives for sale in an eBay webpage\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ed1565053b2e6fb7ad39e6f0aec90c4f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Choice found a range of potentially prohibited butterfly knives on online marketplaces. (Supplied: CHOICE)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The companies removed the products when contacted by Choice, but senior campaigns and policy advisor Bea Sherwood said the reactive &#8220;whack-a-mole&#8221; approach was overwhelming the resources of Choice and the ACCC.<\/p>\n<p>Calls for overarching safety laws to end &#8216;bandaid&#8217; approach<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Choice is calling for the introduction of laws prohibiting the sale of unsafe goods at online and in-person stores to bring Australia in line with the European Union, Canada and the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A general safety provision would also bring Australian law in line with public expectations after a 2024 Choice survey found most consumers mistakenly believed businesses were legally required to ensure all products were safe to sell.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a suit and glasses looks ahead while sitting near other people.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bf9c16e31581b30740f8fa45c4985302.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Andrew Leigh says the government is advancing online marketplace reforms. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Sherwood said it would also close a loophole in Australian law that allowed platforms to claim they were merely facilitating the sale of products provided by suppliers, and thus avoiding liability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It is really hard for legal action to be taken for penalties to be given when it isn&#8217;t Temu itself that is selling the products,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re just essentially putting bandaids on top of bandaids, trying to kind of fix this problem in such a patchwork way with the combination of mandatory standards and the product safety pledge, all these measures that don&#8217;t actually tackle the core problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Government progressing product safety reform<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 2026-27 federal budget included $6.6 million allocated over three years to strengthen Australia&#8217;s product safety framework, including advancing online marketplace reforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal minister responsible for Australian consumer law, Andrew Leigh, told the ABC the reforms would include the introduction of mandatory safety obligations for online marketplaces and increased penalties, but did not confirm whether the government was considering a general safety provision.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Girl with brown hair and a white t-shirt\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/a45a33b2074de2b612eb0d170553ce21.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Daniella Jacobs-Herd undergoes regular skin-graft operations and therapy to recover from her injuries.
