Tatiana, who works in tech sales, is aiming to stash away £100,000 this year. She wants to be in a position to be able to be more selective about the work she takes on from the age of 40.

Monthly budget

My monthly income: I typically take-home between £7,000 to £8,000 from my job in tech sales working as an account manager. This varies because part of my pay is dependent on targets and commission. My annual gross pay is £165,000. I can make extra if I exceed my targets. I recently increased my pension salary sacrifice, so my net pay is lower than it has been.

My monthly outgoings: I pay my parents £650 a month to help cover their bills and grocery costs. My other personal monthly expenses include: mobile, £27; gym, £22; subscriptions like Apple and Spotify, £27; critical illness and life insurance cover, £106; transport, £400; car fuel and car insurance, £150; money into my stocks and shares ISA, at least £1,000 a month; money into work pension via my contribution, £2,900; eating out and entertainment, £400; therapy twice a month, £130; clothes, £100; hobbies, £100; beauty and skincare, £150; gifts, £100; holidays, £300 to £400.

I grew up with my family in Zimbabwe before we moved to the UK when I was eight. My parents always worked extremely hard and instilled a strong work ethic in me. I’m working hard now to help my parents enjoy a brilliant retirement. I studied economics at university.

I got a paper round at the age of 14 before getting a job in a John Lewis store. I worked throughout university too. After leaving university, my first main job was at an investment bank when I was 19. I worked there for 12 weeks on an internship and made £12,000. It was extremely intense and I realised that while I wanted to earn good money, I also wanted to be able to enjoy a full life. By 24, I was working in a management consultancy earning £50,000 a year.

After securing a number of other roles and pay rises, I took a career break for a year and a half from December 2023 to travel, returning in July 2025. I now work for a tech organisation in software sales. My annual gross pay is £165,000.

 Shorts

 Scroll to previous short

 Scroll to next short

The one easy habit which keeps your
brain young

From adopting a different running route to taking up a new hobby, here are seven ways in which new experiences can dramatically alter your brain health for the better.

Making friends at work can have a profound impact on happiness (Photo: Tim Robberts/Getty)

Why we need new experiences

A well-connected brain is more resilient to stress, illness and the effects of ageing.

Neurologist Dr Steve Allder says when we try unfamiliar things, our brain is forced to work in new ways.

Over time, this improves the brain’s ability to adapt to change and respond to challenges, helping us to preserve thinking skills and emotional balance.

Why we need new experiences

They strengthen memory formation

Regularly exposing yourself to new situations – even small ones – helps exercise your memory systems, which improves your ability to store and retrieve information.

A human brain made of wool with folded paper brainwaves – stock photo. This will be spread across investments, my pension and cash savings. I also want to be able to monetise my social media content. A big part of the reason I want to save £100,000 this year is that I spent £70,000 during my career break. My travels also gave me a taste for the life I want to live, so I need adequate savings and investments for the longer term.

Once I am in my forties I want to be able to be in a position whereby work is optional for me. So, while I am still earning a lot and keeping my costs low, I want to add as much as I can to my savings and investments. By this point, I want enough money and assets to be able to work on my own terms, either on a freelance basis or in a consultancy role if I choose to.

The high-paying jobs I’ve had have been stressful and I have already been working since I was 14. I don’t want to have to sustain this level of pace of work in the long-term.

I have prioritised maximising my earnings for a long time and have never been an over-spender. I’m a Christian and humility is important to me. I’m not materialistic and value experiences, including travel, over things.

I started posting on TikTok (@tatianamamixo) and Instagram (@tatianamami) during my career break. I post about being a young, independent woman who doesn’t always follow the traditional path. I share my lessons and learnings with other women and often talk about my financial and career goals. I’m not making money from social media but hope to in the future.

Living at home enables me to save a lot of money. I can also be present for my parents and spend quality time with them. In the past I did try to buy a home, but had three sales fall through. I’m not convinced property is the investment it was once. I also like being able to invest the majority of my earnings.

For the last four years I have been able to max out my £20,000 annual stocks and shares ISA allowance. I have £85,000 in a stocks and shares ISA with Moneybox and £23,000 in a Lifetime ISA. I’m not adding any money to the Lifetime ISA now. I add at least £1,000 to my investments a month. I also have some cash savings.

Saving money in a tax-efficient pension is a priority for me. I add £2,900 a month to my work pension and my employer adds £950 a month. I have £120,000 saved in pensions to date. As a higher earner, I’m comfortable with my net pay being lower due to salary sacrifice. I’d like to retire when I am in my mid-fifties. I couldn’t survive solely on the state pension.

Money itself doesn’t mean much to me but having a full life does. I’d like to continue earning a higher income and earn £250,000 a year or more soon. There’s no upper limit in my mind.

Want to take part in How I Manage My Money?
