A driver can’t see the front of their car, meaning Antonelli could only frantically describe to his engineer the car’s sudden inability to turn.

He pitted once for new tyres and a new nose as a precaution, dropping him from the cusp of victory to sixth.

It was only after that stop that the team realised what had happened. Another pit stop and an almighty pull freed the broken bodywork from the suspension, but it left Antonelli languishing in 10th place.

Remarkably, he was penalised after the race for exceeding track limits, the offences coming mostly on laps he was struggling to command his damaged car.

The penalty left him scoreless for the second time in the last three grands prix following his engine failure in Barcelona.

It amounted to a dizzying fall from what had previously looked like an unreachable lead earlier in the season.

“We had an incredible run with five races, five wins in a row, and everything was probably going too much my way,” Antonelli said, processing the horror run of misfortune.

“Then we had two DNFs in three races, and obviously it’s tough to swallow, because Barcelona I was running P2, here I was going for the win.

“I think we had a real shot, and I was within striking distance. It’s a shame I didn’t even have the chance to try, but it is what it is.

“It went this way, and the most important is that we bounce back stronger.”

While Antonelli limped around in the midfield, title rivals George Russell and Lewis Hamilton finished second and third, piling on the pain

And it’s changed the title complexion.

‘F*** THIS’ Verstappen rages after crash | 01:09

WHERE DID ALL THE POINTS GO?

Russell might have been forgiven for taking some cynical satisfaction from his teammate’s plight.

After all, for much of this season it’s been him lamenting his bad luck as Antonelli has run away with the title lead.

Just this weekend he was lamenting mysterious straight-line speed issues, though team boss Toto Wolff told him the problem had been solved before the grand prix.

Russell’s deficit had blown out to a whopping 68 points just three rounds ago, after the Monaco Grand Prix.

The situation has become so dire that Lewis Hamilton had jumped him for second place, his deficit a slightly smaller 66 points.

But in just three weekends Antonelli’s lead has been slashed by almost two thirds — he now leads Russell by just 25 points and Hamilton by 32 points — almost entirely due to bad luck.

Antonelli’s lost points summary

Barcelona: 18 points (engine failure)

Great Britain: 25 points (wheel shield)

For the sake of this calculation, we’ll assume Antonelli was set to win the British Grand Prix given his considerable pace advantage over Leclerc. Combined with Barcelona, he’s lost a stunning 43 points in just three weekends.

But in fact the failures have been more costly than the raw numbers suggest.

In Barcelona he’d just passed Russell for second place when his engine packed in, resulting in a 21-point swing against him.

At Silverstone he almost certainly would have scored the maximum 25 points given his pace advantage over Charles Leclerc. That would have resulted a 15-point gain on Russell and a three-point gain on Hamilton.

Instead Russell outscored him by 18 points and Hamilton by 15 points — swings of 33 points and 18 points respectively.

A rough reinstatement of those swings — ignoring corollary results from rewriting history — and we would’ve had Antonelli leading Russell by 79 points and Hamilton by 50 points.

How does that compare to Russell’s run of bad luck from earlier in the season?

Russell’s lost points summary

Japan: 3 points (safety car timing)

Canada: 18 points (engine failure)

Monaco: 15 points (drive-through penalty)

To calculate these numbers, we’ve extrapolated where Russell was likely to finish rather than simply using where he was at the time of the failure, as explained here.

The loss amounts to 36 points.

Unlike Antonelli, however, Russell never retired while holding a decisive advantage over his teammate. Bad luck struck while he was ahead in both Japan and Canada, but Antonelli was quicker on both occasions.

When you correct the results of the above races to undo this bad luck, Antonelli ends up with just seven fewer points, a much smaller swing.

All accounted for up to the end of the Monaco Grand Prix — Russell’s last dose of bad luck — and he would have sat with a much-reduced 25-point deficit rather than his season-high 68-point margin.

Remarkably that’s exactly where the gap sits today, three rounds later, at exactly 25 points.

Leclerc wins amidst safety car confusion | 03:32

MOMENTUM STILL WITH ANTONELLI

“Whether the luck has balanced out or not, I’m not sure,” Russell said. “However, based on my performances and based on his performances over the course of these nine races, I think probably a 25-point gap in his favour is probably correct.

“Whether it should be 25 points, whether it should be 10 points, whether it should be 35 points is a debate, but [it is] in that ballpark between. I think anywhere from 10 to 30 points behind is probably about fair.”

That means the remainder is all down to relative form in equal machinery, something Russell was willing to own up to in Silverstone after inheriting a fortunate second place, his luck evidently turning in his favour of Ferrari pitted Hamilton out of his way behind the safety car.

“The performance wasn’t good enough, and if I’m being brutally honest, I’m not going to fight for a championship if the performances continue like that,” he said candidly.

“I’m not coming away from this weekend satisfied. I’ll take the result, but I would have been more satisfied leaving Canada when I broke down from the lead than I am today standing P2, just because I probably deserved the win in Canada, and today I didn’t deserve to stand where I stood.”

Comparing their grand prix performances this year — that is, excluding sprint qualifying and sprint races — it’s clear that Antonelli has a decisive advantage according to every major metric.

Russell vs. Antonelli, 2026 to date

Qualifying head to head: Antonelli leads 5-4

Qualifying differential: Antonelli ahead by 0.8 places

Time differential: Antonelli faster by 0.078 seconds

Race head to head: Antonelli leads 4-3

Race differential: Antonelli ahead by 0.3 places

Points: Antonelli ahead 179-154 (53.8-46.2 per cent)

These are mightily impressive numbers for a driver in just his second season in Formula 1, especially considering he’s up against a driver with far more experience and considerable innate speed.

“I need to be better,” he said. “I need to be working better with my team. We need to be maximising everything.”

For this reason it’s clear we’re not talking about a form slump or momentum shift.

Antonelli has been the quicker driver in just about every grand prix this season, and that hasn’t stopped in the last three races. Even in Austria, where Russell claimed a controlled victory, the Italian had the pace to beat the sister car had he started higher up the grid following the qualifying confusion at the Red Bull Ring.

This is only a points slump, and there’s no sign that Antonelli’s grip on the sport is slackening despite his diminished points lead.

BUT BOTH ARE VULNERABLE TO FERRARI

What will concern Antonelli, however, is Mercedes’s increasingly dire run of unreliability.

Serious car problems have occurred at four of the last six grands prix, three of which were terminal issues.

Prior to Silverstone, the problems appeared contained — though they were all catastrophic — to the complex new power unit. The issue was in the battery pack, which was updated in time for the Austrian Grand Prix with a fix Mercedes hopes will prevent a recurrence.

Antonelli’s wheel shield failure, however, changes the game, being a bodywork-related issue.

Of course cars have problems from time to time, and no team has been totally immune from failure under these new regulations.

But Mercedes’s form makes this a worrying trend that can’t be ignored.

Mercedes leads the way on the dishonour board for points lost through unreliability as both a constructor and an engine manufacturer. The results are skewed by the fact Mercedes is always contending for victories — whereas Aston Martin’s horrifying unreliability count isn’t costing it points, owing to a lack of competitiveness — but it’s nonetheless a concerning statistic.

“Generally we just had too many DNFs and lost two second places and now one victory,” Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said, per ESPN. “Other than the top car that we have and the great driving, that is the predominant issue.

But Wolff said the fast-but-risky approach was his preferred way to tackle the season.

“I think we are such a performance organisation on the chassis and engine side, we want to squeeze everything out,” he said.

“But I’d rather dial back a little bit something that is really good and fix some of the reliability gremlins rather than running behind on performance.

“So far we’ve won seven races out of nine, and I’d rather have this than slow and unreliable.”

The result, however, has been to keep Ferrari and Hamilton in the championship hunt.

Not only his Hamilton’s deficit now an eminently closeable 32 points, but Ferrari is only 78 points behind Mercedes in the race for the constructors championship.

Of course average performances this season would suggest that’s no problem, but the average doesn’t take into account the trend.

Ferrari is improving, with two of the last three victories. Even if Leclerc’s Silverstone win was fortunate, the fact he and Hamilton were in the mix at all at such an engine-sensitive circuit suggests that the Scuderia should be competitive at the less extreme circuits that comprise the bulk of the schedule.

“It looks like it,” Hamilton said when asked if Ferrari could take the fight to Mercedes.

“The team’s doing a phenomenal job. We have some work still to do to really close the gap on pure performance, but look at these results: two wins for the team this year. This is just fantastic.”

The luck count between Antonelli and Russell has evened out.

Ferrari’s luck, though, might now be turning positive.

The scene was set for a nailbiter: Andrea Kimi Antonelli chasing down Charles Lecelrc for victory at the…

[573
64,63,817,813,816,85
post-783709","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-formula-1","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-f1","tag-formula-1","tag-formula1","tag-sports
["GET
