London: The Australian team were the last to leave England\u2019s most hallowed cricket ground on Sunday night after they won the Women\u2019s T20 World Cup at Lord\u2019s.<\/p>\n

The crowd had gone home and the staff were packing up, but the Australian women wanted to savour their victory<\/a> after more than three weeks of intense competition \u2013 including their crushing defeat of the English team in the final.<\/p>\n

Family and friends joined the players in the empty ground \u2013 owning Lord\u2019s until they had to leave \u2013 and then celebrated into the night.<\/p>\n

The captain, Sophie Molineux, initially told reporters her plan was to brush her teeth and get to bed early, but she admitted things did not work out that way.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was quite late, it was really cool,\u201d Molineux told this masthead in London.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had our family and friends come in and just share some time in the change room together, and then we ended up going out into the ground and we took it all in from the ground as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it was a little bit later than \u2018teeth and bed\u2019 before eight, but it was a great night.\u201d<\/p>\n

The team had a lot to celebrate. Australia did not just win the World Cup, they demonstrated total mastery over the English side by winning the final by seven wickets. A week earlier, they defeated the West Indies by eight wickets. Before that, they beat India by six wickets.<\/p>\n

One day after the win, the team gathered at a pub in the north London district of Primrose Hill to relax over drinks at the rear of the venue on a quiet Monday lunchtime.<\/p>\n

One local spotted the medals around the necks of the cricketers as they walked in. \u201cAre you the Australians who beat England? Shame on you!\u201d she joked. Then she congratulated them.<\/p>\n

While the team has played Lord\u2019s before, winning a final there was a highlight even for this record-breaking side. Molineux never assumed an easy win.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve got a lot of depth, and they\u2019ve got a lot of players that can win a game off their own bat,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like we were in control of the bowling innings, and 150 was a really good score to keep them to. We bowled really well, and they never really got away from us, so we felt in control.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield dominated in the run chase.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just clinical,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Earlier, batting dynamo Phoebe Litchfield lifted the lid on frank team talks about their failings at the previous two World Cups. These were followed by bespoke training sessions to recreate similar pressure moments, which proved helpful as the Australians recognised – and won – virtually any such moment they faced in the UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were led by our amazing coach [Shelley Nitschke] and our support staff and then also our players,\u201d Litchfield said. \u201cBeing able to sit in a room and talk about how and why we missed those moments, and just identifying and naming that fear or that pressure and being like \u2018yeah, it was there\u2019 and we felt it, and we weren\u2019t able to perform.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we did a bit of work with that and then implemented it in training. We tried to manufacture those moments, or just expose us to more of those moments. That was probably the idea around all that work.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut those meetings were uncomfortable, and credit to the girls who were there, potentially the people who made those mistakes … it was a cool thing to be in to just own it and be honest and true.\u201d<\/p>\n

The team will not have long to bask in the glory of their win. Molineux, 28, is only taking two weeks off before she heads to her Southampton team, the Southern Brave, to resume the season in The Hundred, the league that uses the 100-ball format.<\/a><\/p>\n

After that, she will go home to Bairnsdale in Victoria to see friends and family. Then the busy spring and summer will begin with the Women\u2019s Big Bash League from the end of October.<\/p>\n

Head coach Shelley Nitschke is looking at what comes next, including the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka early next year and, further off, the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about using some of the momentum that we have at this World Cup. We\u2019ve been playing a really good style of cricket,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The team will be playing ODIs in Sri Lanka over the Australian summer to prepare for the Champions Trophy in February, which will be limited to the world\u2019s top six teams.<\/p>\n

With all that ahead, the team appeared to enjoy a low-key lunch at the London pub rather than a wild celebration.<\/p>\n

Did anyone stay out all night?<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t, so I don\u2019t know,\u201d laughed Nitschke.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be fair, on the night after the game everyone is pretty tired. It\u2019s been a big campaign. And once you get to the end, it hits them how fatigued they probably are.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Australian women\u2019s cricket team performed so well that they might justifiably feel their success should be getting more attention back home.<\/p>\n

Molineux said the team knew that the FIFA World Cup dominated sport coverage while the women were winning in the UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the same time, we\u2019ve gone about our business over here and done the job,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve also felt a lot of support and love from back home as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got a massive summer of cricket coming up. The WBBL schedules have just been released, as there\u2019s so much cricket to be watched back home.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, hopefully, winning this and being able to take a trophy home can bring some momentum. And it\u2019ll be nice to get home and celebrate with Aussies.\u201d<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll be able to remind people back home that there was another world cup being played the other day. And the Australians won it.<\/p>\n
