It would be the first back-to-back years of sub-2 per cent growth since the end of the 1990-91 recession.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Consumer spending is expected to slow this year and next, contributing to the nation\u2019s poorest growth outlook for decades.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/607f087c0b5a82666e8242c138b69d31f5148490.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Consumer spending is expected to slow this year and next, contributing to the nation\u2019s poorest growth outlook for decades.Renee Nowytarger<\/p>\n<p>The slower growth will be accompanied <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/inflation-eases-but-key-measure-rises-to-highest-level-in-almost-two-years-20260624-p609in.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by ongoing inflation<\/a>, which Deloitte believes will hang around 4 per cent through 2026-27 before falling to 2.6 per cent in 2027-28.<\/p>\n<p>Real wage growth will go backwards in 2026-27 while slower economic growth will mean unemployment, now at 4.4 per cent, is expected to average 4.9 per cent next financial year before peaking at 5 per cent the following year.<\/p>\n<p>Deloitte partner Stephen Smith said the war against Iran and this year\u2019s increase in inflation had exposed economic vulnerabilities that had developed over recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/australia-is-falling-behind-bosses-are-too-much-like-zog-and-not-enough-like-americans-20260629-p60au9.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Costco is proving that you can be productive in the Australian supermarket sector.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2dc182f3359f3039b24d4d2ae0b68b79ae5f7a86.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia is now structurally exposed in ways that have become hard to ignore. Deloitte Access Economics has rarely adopted such a downbeat assessment of the short-term outlook,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long, strong population growth has masked a weak underlying productivity performance and lifted aggregate growth while doing less to improve living standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears of insufficient investment in housing, infrastructure, energy and the economy\u2019s productive capacity have left the supply side of the economy struggling to keep pace with demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deloitte is expecting the Reserve Bank <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/rba-prepares-for-fire-drills-to-deal-with-the-next-covid-like-crisis-20260629-p60auv.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to lift official interest rates<\/a> once more this year, most likely at its August meeting. That would take the cash rate to 4.6 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>But financial markets believe it is much more likely the Reserve\u2019s next move will be a cut. Pricing of a rate rise fell to its lowest level this year on Monday, with the chance of a hike now at 38 per cent by February.<\/p>\n<p>A rate cut by September next year is now fully priced in with a 50 per cent chance of a second cut by Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>After being <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/post-covid-debt-explosion-a-major-challenge-for-all-states-bar-one-20260626-p60ac4.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the nation\u2019s strongest economy<\/a> for several years, Western Australia is expected to be the slowest this financial year. Deloitte is tipping WA growth to slow to 0.7 per cent, far behind the Northern Territory (5.9 per cent), NSW, South Australia and Victoria (all 1.3 per cent), Queensland (1.7 per cent), Tasmania (0.9 per cent) and the ACT (1.6 per cent).<\/p>\n<p>Deloitte said the largest impact to the economy was the war against Iran. Financial markets are also \u201cfrothy\u201d with a heavy dependence on expected profits out of the AI sector.<\/p>\n<p>It did note there were some positives. The surge in <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/global-recession-and-the-end-of-the-middle-class-what-ai-exuberance-could-do-to-the-world-20260626-p60ag6.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spending on data centres<\/a> and technology within Australia did offer the chance of a much-needed lift in productivity. Business investment alone is forecast to grow by 6.9 per cent this year and 5 per cent in 2027-28.<\/p>\n<p>But Smith said cost-of-living pressures remained the biggest weight on the economy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mortgage repayments on top of higher costs on everything from food to insurance is weighing on the economy.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1b0790398038cf84fdbd022cd23469938ffe01fc.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Mortgage repayments on top of higher costs on everything from food to insurance is weighing on the economy.Jessica Shapiro<\/p>\n<p>He said mortgage repayments, which had climbed by $350 a month on the average home loan due to the Reserve Bank\u2019s three interest rate hikes this year, and higher prices for rents, insurance, groceries and electricity, were all buffeting households.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHouseholds remain under pressure.
