{"id":78445,"date":"2025-08-18T22:17:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T22:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/78445\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T22:17:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T22:17:12","slug":"some-teachers-are-fighting-ai-but-is-there-a-case-that-it-can-work-with-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/78445\/","title":{"rendered":"Some teachers are fighting AI, but is there a case that it can work with them?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There&#8217;s no doubt that Australian teachers would like to have more time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some tasks, including reviewing just one student assessment, can take teachers up to 30 to 40 minutes to complete.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But what if there were a tool that could do the same work in mere seconds?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/downloadthisshow\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Download This Show<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Download This Show is your weekly guide to the world of media, culture, and technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, like ChatGPT, present opportunities for greater efficiency in a variety of different sectors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And while AI&#8217;s ability to produce realistic, human-like content has long <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-01-24\/what-is-chatgpt-how-can-it-be-detected-by-school-university\/101884388\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">sparked concerns<\/a> about its impact on students&#8217; learning, a <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.education.gov.au\/schooling\/resources\/australian-framework-generative-artificial-intelligence-ai-schools\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">framework exists in Australia to guide the responsible and ethical use of it<\/a> in ways that benefit students, schools, and society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tech giants have also accelerated their plans to embed generative AI in our education systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/08\/technology\/chatgpt-teachers-openai-microsoft.html\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">recently announced<\/a> they were funding a $US23 million ($35 million) AI teaching hub in New York for educators, to help them learn how to better integrate AI tools in classrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">So could there be a future where generative AI is embraced in schools, more than it&#8217;s feared?<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Genie not going back in the bottle&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After ChatGPT was launched by OpenAI in November 2022, education departments across Australia swiftly <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-01-25\/tasmanian-schools-ban-chatgpt-ai-access-for-students\/101887948\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">banned its use by students<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There were concerns that, due to the sophistication of the tool, it would be difficult to detect when students were using AI to plagiarise content<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Students have certainly taken to the technology very quickly. The concern, of course, is that this genie is not going back in the bottle,&#8221; David Braue, a technology journalist at Cybercrime Magazine, tells ABC Radio National&#8217;s <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/downloadthisshow\/china-digital-id-ai-clasroom-strava-security-pet-translate\/105519828\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Download This Show<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a blue shirt, middle aged, looks serious at the camera with a beige background. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0816acafb475f0ce40dac5ce102b4703\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">When it comes to AI, teachers need to be aware of their obligations regarding data and the fairness of content, says David Braue.\u00a0 (Supplied: David Braue\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.education.gov.au\/schooling\/resources\/australian-framework-generative-artificial-intelligence-ai-schools\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools<\/a> was released by the federal government in late 2023 to address the challenges and opportunities presented by these tools to teachers and students. There is a plan to review the framework annually.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But RMIT computing professor Michael Cowling says we need to consider the opportunities these tools present as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When we first started talking about generative AI, we were very focused on academic integrity \u2026 that&#8217;s one component,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But another is teaching the teachers what they can use this tool for effectively. In doing so, you help them to understand what it&#8217;s used for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And that means, ultimately, your students understand better what it&#8217;s useful for as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>South Australia&#8217;s use of AI in schools<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While many Australian schools had banned generative AI use by 2023, the South Australian government took a different approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They were the first state to trial a generative AI chatbot they developed with Microsoft, called <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.education.sa.gov.au\/parents-and-families\/curriculum-and-learning\/ai\/edchat\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">EdChat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">EdChat is a generative AI chatbot tool that is customised for a school environment. The chatbot has access to the same data as ChatGPT, but it doesn&#8217;t send out user information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Students and teachers prompt the tool by asking questions they&#8217;d like to learn more about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Adelaide Botanic High School uses EdChat today, and principal Sarah Chambers says that she is grateful to be working in a school that engages with this issue differently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The front entrance for Adelaide Botanic High School \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/9fe12227f6cbc6d2ba0052691396baa8\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Adelaide Botanic High School has embraced the generative AI tool, EdChat. \u00a0 (ABC Radio Adelaide: Laila Ferrier)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think the thing I appreciate about the approach is to not shy away from this challenge, to really look to the reality that this is a technology that will influence how we work, from now and into the future, because it&#8217;s not going anywhere,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And to acknowledge that and create a tool that responds to some of the challenges that we do know exist around AI.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Other challenges, besides plagiarism, include ensuring the security of students&#8217; data and filtering content that is presented to students adequately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The EdChat tool being used in South Australia includes safety features to address these challenges, including a content filter that the department says &#8220;blocks inappropriate requests&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The challenges of teachers using AI<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While generative AI is a challenge for educators, it&#8217;s not dissimilar to issues they have always faced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For teachers to design assessments of learning that are genuinely capturing a student&#8217;s growth is a high-level skill,&#8221; Ms Chambers says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We always have challenges around plagiarism and students using other sources \u2026 generative AI has just simply provided a more sophisticated tool for students to be able to do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As Australian schools cautiously embrace AI tools, another challenge could be that teachers will rely on AI too much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Cowlings believes &#8220;it&#8217;s okay for [teachers] to be reliant on AI as long as they understand how to use it&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Braue says that isn&#8217;t enough to safeguard against the risks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with beard and glasses smiles at the camera \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/d78b8e82a7f1b1150099165bd2807b5f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Michael Cowling says we need to be open to the opportunities AI can provide.\u00a0 (Supplied: Michael Cowling)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Even if they know how to use it, they [teachers] may not be aware of their obligations for data protection,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Fairness of content is another issue schools must consider when it comes to AI applications, according to Mr Braue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We know that a lot of the AI models that are out there are biased in terms of gender and ethnicity \u2026 that is a reality for these models,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So teachers need to be very aware that what they&#8217;re producing needs to be objectively looked at through these lenses\u2026 It can&#8217;t just be about getting stuff done faster.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Do we need a national approach?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Following South Australia&#8217;s AI trial, several states and territories have announced their own, including Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/listenapp?itm_source=abc_everyday_full_width_promotion&amp;itm_medium=owned_abc&amp;itm_campaign=%5Baudio%3Alisten%3Afeatures-and-benefits%3A0923%3Aabc_rn_sport_webpage%3Atier-b%3Acpc%5D&amp;itm_content=%5B20230926-download-now%3Aimage%3Aabc_rn_sport_webpage%3Aaudio%3Alisten%3Afeatures-and-benefits%3A0923%3Aawareness%5D&amp;itm_term=\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stream your favourite shows on the free ABC listen app<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dr Karl knows the best app for free podcasts, radio, music, news and audiobooks \u2026 and you don&#8217;t need to be a scientist to find it!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But this approach is not adequate, according to the Productivity Commission (PC). It handed down <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pc.gov.au\/inquiries\/current\/adaptable-workforce\/interim\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">an interim report last week<\/a> recommending that AI integration in schools needs to be Australia-wide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;A national approach would aid innovation, support equal access to high-quality tools, and spread the benefits to all,&#8221; the report stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Chambers says generative AI is a tool that schools need to adapt to quickly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a &#8216;learning with&#8217; model that&#8217;s needed \u2026 we actually have to recognise that the technology is developing faster than the expertise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She says she hopes future expansion of these tools is based on feedback from schools, like Adelaide Botanic, which have been using it for some time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We should be listening to the voices of people who are leading in this work, but also ensure that we&#8217;ve got opportunities to share that emerging work that&#8217;s happening on the ground.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Chambers says that it&#8217;s important students learn how to navigate generative AI tools for their futures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We know the access to the knowledge is there, but their ability to understand what is good quality information, what is valid information, reliable sources, this presents a really broad perspective or ethical moral consideration of the issue at hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Those thinking skills and creativity skills, they are even more important than ever.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There&#8217;s no doubt that Australian teachers would like to have more time.
