\tShowcasing the majesty of Scotland’s Golf Coast<\/a>, the Genesis Scottish Open is the ideal prelude to the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, providing a welcome opportunity for an impressively assembled field to\u00a0acclimatise themselves to the\u00a0intricacies of links golf.<\/p>\n

\tBased at East Lothian’s Renaissance Club<\/a> since 2019, the event has a settled home once again, which has proven to be a suitable stage to prepare for the year’s final major, but we shouldn’t underestimate just how significant this tournament remains by itself.<\/p>\n

\tJointly sanctioned by the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, the importance of this date on the calendar is demonstrated by the fact that world number one Scottie Scheffler and Masters champion Rory McIlroy are headlinging it.<\/p>\n

\tThe likes of Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, Victor Hovland and home favourite Robert MacIntyre are also in attendance this week<\/a>, but despite the star quality of these names, it may well be an outsider who surprisingly emerges from the pack to secure the prestigious trophy.<\/p>\n

\tLooking at the odds available on Betfred, we have picked out ten players who may well feature on the leaderboard during the weekend and threaten to claim Scotland’s national title.<\/p>\n

\tWinner of the Scottish Open a decade ago at Castle Stuart, the veteran Swede enjoyed a spectacular resurgence last year, clinching both the British Masters and BMW PGA Championship, but although this campaign hasn’t been anywhere near as dramatic, there is no doubt that the 43-year-old has the potential to contend here.<\/p>\n

\tBrian Harman (125\/1)<\/p>\n

\tFormer Champion Golfer of the Year, it’s easy to forget just how formidable Harman can be on the seaside, having posted top ten finishes in the Open at St Andrews and Royal Portrush, in addition to his dominant triumph at Hoylake in 2023. The week before he lifted the Claret Jug, the American had played well at Renaissance.<\/p>\n

\tMatt Wallace (100\/1)<\/p>\n

\tAlways a fierce and determined competitor, Wallace finished in a tie for 14th during the inaugural Scottish Open that was staged here, and he has performed solidly lately, including runner-up places at the Open d’Italia and Texas Open. Such results have seen the 36-year-old Englishman secure a late place in the Open Championship at Birkdale.<\/p>\n

\tRyan Fox (100\/1)<\/p>\n

\tThe New Zealander is a former winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and finished in a tie for 12th at Renaissance in 2023. His results in 2026 haven’t been spectacular, but there have been decent outings too, including top ten finishes in the Canadian Open and Genesis Invitational.<\/p>\n

\tVictor Perez (110\/1)<\/p>\n

\tMany will be aware that the Frenchman has been a long-term resident of Scotland, basing himself in recent years at the Renaissance Club, meaning that there is a home advantage dynamic to consider. Also a past winner of the Dunhill Links, Perez has been part of LIV Golf this year, but he was a runner-up at the Soudal Open and posted a tie for ninth finish at last week’s BMW International Open.<\/p>\n

\tMatti Schmid (225\/1)<\/p>\n

\tThe German played brilliantly at the PGA Championship in May – finishing in fourth place at\u00a0Aronimink. His results haven’t been great since that major breakthrough, but the 28-year-old did post a respectable tie for 17th place at Renaissance last year and has made the cut in two of three appearances in the Open, demonstrating that he has some links pedigree.<\/p>\n

\tHaotong Li (150\/1)<\/p>\n

\tThe Chinese star is mercurial – to say the least – but we have seen what is possible when it clicks. The 30-year-old has posted top four finishes in the Open Championship on two occasions, in 2017 and 2025, while he was on the leaderboard for Masters Sunday in April before he spectacularly fell apart around Amen Corner.<\/p>\n

\tBernd Wiesberger (175\/1)<\/p>\n

\tThe experienced Austrian – who won the Volvo China Open in April – triumphed in the first Scottish Open held at Renaissance Club in 2019. Coming off a third place finish in Munich last Sunday, the 40-year-old is arriving in Scotland with good results behind him.<\/p>\n

\tBilly Horschel (400\/1)<\/p>\n

\tCertainly a liked figure on this side of the Atlantic – with two BMW PGA titles at Wentworth to his name – Horschel has been trying to recover his best form after undergoing hip surgery last season. The 39-year-old was a runner-up in the Open at Royal Troon in 2024 – underlining his links golf credentials.<\/p>\n

\tPadraig Harrington (600\/1)<\/p>\n

\tNewly crowned US Senior Open champion for a third time, the Irishman may be 54, but he loves to compete, embraces the challenge, and fully believes that he can contend with the best players in the world. Twice a winner of the Dunhill Links, twice Champion Golfer of the Year, there is surely one great links run left in this modern great of the game?<\/p>\n

\tThe Scottish Open is always a highlight of the golfing year – with a library of unforgettable moments to reflect upon<\/a> – but it also presents an opportunity for some overlooked names to surprise the big favourites and grasp what has become one of the most coveted trophies in the sport.<\/p>\n
