{"id":785074,"date":"2026-07-07T15:45:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T15:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/785074\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T15:45:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T15:45:41","slug":"were-going-to-go-hard-foxtel-boss-patrick-delany-backs-nrls-global-ambitions-with-new-tv-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/785074\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We&#8217;re going to go hard&#8217;: Foxtel boss Patrick Delany backs NRL&#8217;s global ambitions with new TV deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Foxtel will assist the National Rugby League in its global push, CEO Patrick Delany says, after signing a mega contract with Peter V\u2019landys.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Foxtel has extended its 30-year history with the NRL with the signing of a landmark $5.3 billion TV rights deal, which includes Nine, on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nine will\u00a0retain\u00a0the commercial\u00a0rights\u00a0and Foxtel will\u00a0retain\u00a0the right to televise every game except the State of Origin and the Grand Final.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Delany told Sky News Australia that Foxtel\u2019s owner, DAZN, offered unprecedented reach for rugby league as a sport.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0going to go hard,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the key to it is that you can\u2019t fall in love with the sport unless it\u2019s in front of you.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With all of the subscribers we have, when we\u2019re running live soccer, we can put also some rugby league in it and I think it\u2019s going to take off in quite a few countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0very difficult\u00a0if\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0in a walled garden, which is what NRL was. When you put it in amongst\u00a0all of\u00a0your other things, I think\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0go\u00a0really well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr V\u2019landys earlier on Tuesday touted the deal\u2019s potential to broaden rugby league\u2019s international appeal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe deal future-proofs the game for everybody&#8230; more importantly, it gives us the platform to grow the game, not only here in Australia, but globally,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the deal has been with DAZN \u2013 there are 400 million subscribers to DAZN that rugby league will be marketed to. The $5.3 billion over the seven years does not include that potential growth in the international market.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Delany said the seven-year rights deal was also important on the home front.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NRL is so important to us because our customers love it,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the new deal, there\u2019ll be more games as teams are added, we get all of those games, so (when the) 20th team is added, we\u2019ll get 10 games, seven will be exclusive, three not exclusive and there\u2019s a lot more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0going to have to chew\u00a0really hard, look after\u00a0all of\u00a0our customers, keep\u00a0them\u00a0and gain some more customers.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new deal commences from the 2028 season.<\/p>\n<p>It marked the largest negotiation in the sport\u2019s 30-year rights history with the broadcasters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nine had submitted a lucrative bid to broadcast the available rights across free-to-air and their paywalled Stan streaming service \u2013 before it was ultimately rejected.<\/p>\n<p>Foxtel and its Kayo venture will continue to broadcast each home and away and finals game \u2013\u00a0except\u00a0the grand final \u2013 for the NRL and NRLW for the entirety of the broadcast deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kayo now holds deals with the AFL, NRL, Supercars, Formula 1 and cricket alongside U.S. sports through ESPN including the NFL, NBA, NHL, and NBL.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NRL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Abdo said the deal offered the sport \u201ccertainty, flexibility and resources to pursue ambitious growth opportunities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis agreement reflects the strength of rugby league today and confidence in where the game can go next.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is the result of years of planning, discipline and execution by the Commission as we positioned the game to maximise its value in a rapidly changing media landscape,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The deal also includes a clause for the provision of a 20th\u00a0team in the competition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The team is expected to be based in\u00a0New Zealand, and\u00a0join the NRL by 2029 or 2030.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have given a commitment to DAZN that we will look at an additional team in 2029,\u201d\u00a0Mr\u00a0V\u2019landys said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is understood Foxtel\u00a0had,\u00a0at one stage in negotiations, offered to work with Seven and Ten to simulcast the Origin series and grand\u00a0final.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Australian reported Nine threw in\u00a0additional\u00a0cash to keep Origin and\u00a0the sport\u2019s grand\u00a0final.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other players were also in the mix for up-for-grabs rights deals,\u00a0Mr\u00a0V\u2019landys said, including Amazon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp until late last night we were still\u00a0negotiation\u00a0terms of this agreement,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp until the execution of that contract, everyone was in play. I thank the other parties who have missed out.
