AFL great Tony Modra has returned home from hospital after he was seriously injured in a horror truck crash.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Adelaide Crows legend said he had been \u201coverwhelmed by the kindness and care\u201d shown to him and his family in the weeks since the crash.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have left hospital to continue my recovery at home and only now starting to wrap my head around the incredible amount of support and well wishes that have come our way,\u201d Modra said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remain deeply grateful to the members of the public who gave me vital first aid until professional help arrived, to others who offered reassurance, and to the emergency responders, medical staff and specialists who have cared for me since the accident.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy progress has been encouraging and we kindly ask that our privacy continues to be respected as we focus on my rehabilitation. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Modra was airlifted to Flinders Medical Centre from the crash site at Back Valley, south of Adelaide, last month.<\/p>\n
He reportedly had surgery on his cheek, jaw and eye socket following the crash, the Herald Sun\u2019s Jon Ralph told Kayo Sports last month.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter grave fears for his life, he has taken significant steps forward in the last 12 hours. That mean those close to him believe he is out of the woods,\u201d Ralph said in June.<\/p>\n
Modra\u2019s wife Erica called it a \u201cfreak accident\u201d in an earlier statement, thanking friends, family, and the AFL community for their support during the ordeal.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are extremely grateful to the three passersby \u2013 including two people who were trained in first aid and another who provided comfort \u2013 who stopped to help within seconds,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe emergency services\u2019 professionalism, care and swift action were extraordinary as well. Without doubt, they all played a critical role in saving Anthony\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Modra finished his career with 588 goals from 165 games and was a two-time All-Australian.<\/p>\n
He spent his last three seasons playing for Fremantle.<\/p>\n
