<\/a><\/p>\nWingett races an Australian-built 1962 Elfin Formula Junior in both circuit and hillclimb events around her home state of Victoria.<\/p>\n
The third of 20 cars built between 1961 and \u201864, the car\u2019s pedigree includes racing at 40 circuits across the globe.<\/p>\n
Upon receiving the invitation to race at Goodwood in February, Wingett set about raising the necessary funds to ship the car and equipment to England via a GoFundMe campaign.<\/p>\n
\u201c[The car] is expected to arrive in August, I think the first week of August, which is pretty amazing,\u201d Wingett told Speedcafe.<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously that\u2019s quite early, but we wanted to allow a little bit of time or a buffer. Because of the war and different things, they have to go the long way around.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy allowing that buffer, if anything happens \u2013 I hope it doesn\u2019t \u2013 but if it does, then we\u2019ve got a little bit of time to play with so I don\u2019t miss the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019d be awful to have shipped the car and then it doesn\u2019t arrive in time.\u201d<\/p>\n

At just 25 years old, Wingett\u2019s goal is to be the flag-bearer for youth in historic racing on the biggest stage in the sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the most prestigious and iconic historic race event, I feel blessed to have the opportunity to represent Australia and youth in historic motorsport,\u201d Wingett said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s not much youth in the sport, so it\u2019s great to be representing us, and it\u2019s a massive milestone in my racing career.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been on the bucket list for a while. To have the opportunity to go is amazing, let alone being able to race is just next level.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite being a third-generation racer after her father and grandfather, Wingett stumbled into racing from outside of the sport.<\/p>\n
At 16, Wingett shared a Mini alongside her brother at the Historic Leyburn Sprints in Queensland, catching the motorsport bug.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got really sick in high school. I used to be very sporty, I swam for nationals, [I was] swimming seven times a week,\u201d Wingett added.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got really sick with chronic fatigue through glandular fever, they believe. So I had to stop everything, I just couldn\u2019t keep physically up to it all.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was always very outgoing and wanted to do stuff, and Dad said \u2018How about we put you in a race car? It\u2019s a little less physical. It\u2019s very mentally draining, but less physical on your body. And you said if you hate it, no loss. We\u2019ll just sell the car and you move on\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cI fell in love with it the minute I sat in the car.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen through me doing it, my brother really wanted to get involved and my sister has actually just started as well in historics, so it\u2019s a real family-oriented sport for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alongside racing the Elfin, Wingett has also recently raced Formula 2 machinery owned by historic racer Peter Williams, and family-owned Hyundai Excels.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy brother and I dabbled a little bit in Excels, and I\u2019m still keen to continue,\u201d Wingett said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI haven\u2019t done a bit in a while, our focus has been historics for me, but it\u2019s not the same.<\/p>\n
\u201cExcel is very competitive and you want to get to that next level, but that\u2019s not what it\u2019s about for me. I just want to do it for fun and I never want it to become unpleasant.\u201d<\/p>\n
While the Elfin is currently en route to the UK, Wingett\u2019s GoFundMe remains open for donations.<\/a><\/p>\nThe 2026 Goodwood Revival will be held on September 18-20.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Abby Wingett aboard the 1962 Elfin Formula Junior.
