An interstate Sheffield Shield final would not be unprecedented — Hobart hosted the 2015 decider between Victoria and Western Australia, while the 2017 final was played in Alice Springs.

7/37! Victoria choke in Shield Final! | 06:27

The 2026/27 Sheffield Shield commences on October 7, with reigning champions South Australia taking on Victoria at Junction Oval in a rematch of last summer’s final.

Meanwhile, Perth Stadium will host its first Sheffield Shield match in eight years when Western Australia face Tasmania at the 60,000-seat venue from November 23. The fixture takes place less than two weeks before Australia’s Trans-Tasman Trophy series opener against New Zealand at the same venue, which commences on December 9.

Last summer, the first Ashes Test at Perth Stadium wrapped up in less than two days, courtesy of some reckless batting and superb bowling, with the venue earning a “very good” pitch rating from the ICC. However, head curator Isaac McDonald and his team will be under pressure to produce a surface that provides a fair contest between bat and ball, with last summer’s shortened Test matches costing CA millions in lost revenue.

In early February, each state will play a day-night fixture, including a pink-ball contest between Victoria and Tasmania at the MCG, a month prior to the 150th anniversary Test between Australia and England at the same venue. It will be the first day-night Sheffield Shield match at the MCG in more than a decade.

Elsewhere, the One-Day Cup commences on September 18, with the final scheduled for February 14. Junction Oval will host its first one-day match under lights when Victoria takes on reigning champions New South Wales on September 25, the day before the AFL Grand Final.

Should DRS be used in Shield Final? | 00:35

“We are excited to launch another domestic season, delivering an extensive schedule of cricket across the country,” Roach said in a statement.

“The schedule has been designed to ensure our domestic competitions play a key role in providing performance opportunities for players and support a strong summer of international cricket.

“The February day-night Sheffield Shield round across the MCG, Adelaide Oval and the Gabba provides an important platform for players to develop their skills in pink-ball conditions, with its timing later in the season allowing us to take advantage of optimal conditions and build into the 150th Anniversary Test.

“We’re also pleased that every state will host some home Sheffield Shield matches at its major Test cricket venues this season, including the return of Sheffield Shield cricket to Perth Stadium for the first time in eight years.

“Across the season, there are also key moments for fans, including the One-Day Cup fixture in Melbourne on AFL Grand Final Eve. We are confident that scheduling matches across a mix of major stadiums and traditional venues will again deliver high-quality experiences for players and fans alike.

“We look forward to the start of the domestic season on 18 September and thank the State and Territory Associations and the Australian Cricketers’ Association for their ongoing support.”
