They also placed outfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/refsnro01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rob Refsnyder<\/a> on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 15th, due to a left oblique strain and recalled infielder\/outfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/eatonna01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nate Eaton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>1:26pm: The Red Sox will designate catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sanchal04.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ali S\u00e1nchez<\/a> for assignment today, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChrisCotillo\/status\/1957507880002756685\" rel=\"nofollow\">reports<\/a> Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. The team has yet to announce the move, but they\u2019ll need roster space for their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2025\/08\/red-sox-finalizing-deal-with-nathaniel-lowe.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported agreement<\/a> with veteran first baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lowena01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nathaniel Lowe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez, 28, appeared in only one game with the Red Sox and was hitless in his lone plate appearance. He was 5-for-21 with a couple doubles as a member of the Blue Jays before landing in Boston via waivers after being designated for assignment. S\u00e1nchez has appeared in parts of four major league seasons and suited up for five teams but has just 132 plate appearances in 47 games overall. He\u2019s a .185\/.222\/.235 hitter in that tiny sample of scattershot playing time.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, S\u00e1nchez\u2019s work in the upper minors has been far better. He\u2019s played in parts of six Triple-A seasons and carries a .269\/.340\/.399 slash in 1266 trips to the plate. He\u2019s a better-than-average defender who excels at blocking balls in the dirt and boasts a superlative 39% caught-stealing rate in his 12-year professional career.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez is out of minor league options, so any team that claims him off waivers will have to plug him right onto the big league roster. Waivers are the Red Sox\u2019 only possible course of action with S\u00e1nchez, now that the trade deadline has passed. He\u2019ll be placed on outright or release waivers within the next five days (very likely the former). He\u2019s been outrighted multiple times in his career, so if S\u00e1nchez clears waivers, he\u2019d be able to reject a minor league assignment in favor of free agency<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"1:57pm: The Sox have now officially signed Lowe and designated Sanchez for assignment.
