ORDINARILY, a driver ought to be worried if they were approaching the end of the guaranteed period of their contract in as poor a championship position as Aaron Cameron<\/a> is right now.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s six words that should suggest otherwise in the Supercars sophomore\u2019s case.<\/p>\n

There is no substitute for speed.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve probably heard the notion plenty of times that it\u2019s easier to slow a driver down than to speed one up.<\/p>\n

So, while Cameron is effectively fifth-last in the standings (i.e. 20th) \u2013 11 positions and 432 points behind Blanchard Racing Team stablemate James Golding<\/a> \u2013 there\u2019s every reason to believe that better things are to come.<\/p>\n

Because as it has also often been said, qualifying is king in Supercars.<\/p>\n

Occasionally, a driver may make a dent from back in the pack, but not often. This year alone, not a single race has been won from outside the top five on the starting grid.<\/p>\n

Cameron has pace to burn.<\/p>\n

He ranks ninth on qualifying average in 2026, ahead of reigning champion Chaz Mostert<\/a>. Golding is also behind on both that metric and in the head-to-head stakes (10-9).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s evidence that headline results are within reach the more Cameron refines his race craft \u2013 which may actually end up benefitting from him having signalled to rivals loud and clear that he won\u2019t die wondering in combat.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old recently spoke on the Drivers Only podcast about making alterations to mirror positioning and in-lap\/out-lap maximisation to help lift his game.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve just been working away, trying to refine everything that I\u2019m doing at the moment. Usually I\u2019m a pretty relaxed character the way I go about my racing, but just trying to make sure those one-percenters are locked in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis sport has just got so close with everything that we\u2019re doing that all the ins and out laps are really important now and I feel like that\u2019s somewhere I have lacked a little bit, so pretty keen to knuckle down on that.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s also a fine line\u2026 you\u2019re trying to find a free second or so there but also it can easily go wrong and you lose five or six seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to find any little bit I can to get closer and get back into that top 10, top five sort of fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sure, if in 12 months\u2019 time Cameron were to be 11 spots behind Golding in the championship, there\u2019d be cause for concern.<\/p>\n

But right now, the sheer pace is enough to justify patience that his conversation rate will improve in parallel with experience, and the vibe out of the BRT camp has tended to reflect that.<\/p>\n

Cameron is thought to have last year recommitted to BRT on a one-plus-one deal guaranteeing 2026 with scope for 2027.<\/p>\n

While the Ford squad does have Super2 leader Lochie Dalton<\/a> and enduro co-driver Zak Best<\/a> waiting in the wings, Cameron \u2013 who also is a sponsor\u2019s dream with his larrikin personality \u2013 figures to be the guy to give BRT a one-two punch alongside Golding into the future.<\/p>\n
