Angus Taylor has vowed to \u201cget the balance right\u201d on artificial intelligence amid fears of job losses as the technology revolutionises sectors across the economy.<\/p>\n
The Opposition Leader said on Monday that \u201cAI can be useful\u201d and its benefits were self-evident, given Australia\u2019s uptake.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are seeing that every day. They\u2019re using it all the time,\u201d he told Nine\u2019s Today.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn the other hand, we don\u2019t want it to control us. So, we\u2019ve got to get the balance right.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got to \u2026 make sure the copyright laws are right so it\u2019s not stealing from Australian creators and creatives \u2013 that\u2019s incredibly important.\u201d<\/p>\n
In 2024, global consultancy firm McKinsey, which employed Mr Taylor at the turn of century, estimated 1.3 million Australian workers could be forced to transition into entirely new roles by 2030 due to AI.<\/p>\n
That represented some 9 per cent of the country\u2019s total workforce at the time.<\/p>\n
However, research from the government\u2019s independent science agency released this year found employers leaning into AI were posting 36 per cent more job ads than those not adopting the technology.<\/p>\n
Mr Taylor said the productivity boosts from AI would in turn push wages up.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s how we get prosperity so we\u2019ve got to use it for our benefit \u2013 not have it use us for its benefit,\u201d Mr Taylor said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do believe in raising standards of living. We know technology can help that, but that means it has to be used for our benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Taylor\u2019s comments on striking the right balance signalled a more hands-on approach to what opposition digital economy spokesman Aaron Violi pitched at a conference last month.<\/p>\n
Hailing Australia as \u201ca brilliant adopter of technology\u201d, Mr Violi warned \u201cthe next era of economic growth will not reward passive consumption\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will reward the creators, the builders, and the founders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In a call to \u201cprioritise Australian science and our research and development\u201d, he said wrapping AI in red tape risked hamstringing economic ambition.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to see innovators like those in this room spending less time on bureaucracy, paperwork, and compliance, and more time building the technology that will drive our nation\u2019s productivity,\u201d Mr Violi said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf our regulatory signals are confusing or wrapped in green and red tape, global capital will simply bypass our shores.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must create a predictable, attractive fiscal environment that welcomes international investment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Addressing the NSW Labor State Conference on Sunday, Anthony Albanese told party faithful Australia could \u201cset the ground rules for AI\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can shape the future, not let the future shape us. We can secure new jobs and investment. We can build our sovereignty and our resilience,\u201d the Prime Minister said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we can do it the Labor way, the Australian way, without undercutting conditions, dividing communities or damaging our environment.<\/p>\n
