On the heels of questionable behaviour<\/a> from fans towards Wyndham Clark at the US Open<\/a>, the R&A announced overnight that a code of conduct will be enforced at this year\u2019s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.<\/p>\n With a crowd of 300,000 expected to visit the venue in Southport, England, next week, the protocol \u201caims to ensure that players, spectators, volunteers, officials, staff and the local community can enjoy a welcoming, inclusive and memorable experience\u201d. The guidelines will be outlined to fans through on-site signage, digital channels and ticket communications.<\/p>\n RELATED: Open Championship 2026 \u2013 The R&A\u2019s inaugural Last-Chance Qualifier, explained<\/a><\/p>\n At last month\u2019s US Open at Shinnecock Hills, the Long Island galleries were occasionally hostile towards Clark during the final round. This behaviour included unfriendly remarks, jeers for misses and, perhaps most curiously, silence towards well-played shots. Several fans were escorted off the property due to their behaviour. The reception did not deter Clark, who went on to secure his second major championship by a stroke.<\/p>\n While The Open\u2019s crowds are historically warm and respectable, they too have crossed the line, most notably in 2023 in their treatment<\/a> of eventual champion Brian Harman at Royal Liverpool.<\/p>\n \u201cThe atmosphere at The Open is unlike any other major sporting event and one of the things that makes it so unique. It is built on a shared respect for the players, the course, fellow fans and the traditions of the championship,\u201d said R&A chief executive Mark Darbon. \u201cEvery year, our fans play a huge part in creating that experience.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Open Commitment isn\u2019t about changing what makes The Open so special, it is about maintaining its long-standing traditions.
