They date back more than a year, to Red Bull Racing’s troubled start to the 2025 campaign that hamstrung his championship defence.

The team had entered decline surprisingly soon after its 2023 domination thanks in part to an ongoing brain drain from its Milton Keynes headquarters and the internecine political warfare behind the scenes for control of the team following the 2022 death of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz.

Around this time last year, when Verstappen was toying with the possibility of triggering his exit clause — though his results ultimately didn’t satisfy the criteria — he and his management team were said to be unconvinced by Red Bull Racing’s technical leadership following Adrian Newey’s resignation. At the time there were suggestions that Verstappen’s feedback wasn’t always listened to, causing friction.

Horner’s dismissal — influenced but not decided upon by the Verstappen camp, even if the Dutchman himself has a good relationship with the former boss — resulted in a shock to the team that revitalised its championship fortunes, and Verstappen got to within two points of what would have been a sensational championship victory.

This year, however, Verstappen has been underwhelmed by what the team has developed with a clean slate under new regulations.

Many of last year’s reservations have returned.

It was notable that in Canada he said the team had ignored his set-up preferences, leaving the car slowest among the frontrunners.

“I’ve pointed it out so many times already, but sometimes you just have to let them feel for themselves that it doesn’t work,” he said at the time.

The same frustration bubbled up in Silverstone, where Verstappen told the team to take the car off the grid to start from pit lane with a new engine and different set-up after being outqualified by teammate Isack Hadjar for only the second time this season.

His request was rebuffed, and he ended up spinning out of the race.

“F*** this car,” he radioed angrily. “Unbelievable. F*** this.”

(Photo by Rudy Carezzevoli/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

Team boss Laurent Mekies contended that Verstappen had been running third when he crashed, which wouldn’t have been possible had he started from pit lane, though the argument is academic when the result was a car stuck in the gravel owing to its own technical failure.

Inflaming this particular irritation is that Verstappen’s race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase — who is also the team’s head of racing — has been cut out of some technical conversations by technical director Pierre Waché, according to Dutch paper De Telegraaf. Lambiase will join McLaren by 2028, and speculation suggests he will start a period of gardening leave after this season.

Though it is not unusual for outbound staff to be excluded from sensitive technical matters, Lambiase’s position as both Verstappen’s chief ally and technical conduit has reportedly served to complicate the already delicate situation.

But the frustration goes both ways.

ESPN has reported that Verstappen met with top brass at Red Bull in Austria last month, where he was asked for assurances that he would continue racing with the team next season. Stability, they said, would be important to selling the team to prospective new staff.

There has been further speculation since then that the meeting included an offer from Red Bull to buy out Verstappen’s exit clause — that is, pay him to have the option removed from his deal.

He declined to guarantee he would stick with the team for the duration of his contract and reportedly rebuffed offers to have his exit clause bought out.

According to Dutch paper De Limburger’s podcast Paddock Access, his refusal angered Red Bull administrators, who feel Verstappen’s threats to quit demonstrate a lack of loyalty to the brand that backed his teenage Formula 1 debut and powered him to his four championships and personal fortune while allowing him to dabble in extra-curricular racing activities most other teams would forbid.

Verstappen, of course, might argue that only once in his four title-winning years did his teammate finish second — in 2023, when Sergio Pérez took until the penultimate round of the season to clinch the runner-up position with the most dominant car in Formula 1 history. In other words, his titles belong to him, not the team.

Leclerc wins amidst safety car confusion | 03:32

WHAT’S PIASTRI GOT TO DO WITH IT?

Verstappen was already at the centre of the 2027 driver market, even at a time more than half the grid’s seats remain uncommitted.

Speculation was rampant ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix two weeks ago that Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, had held talks with McLaren CEO Zak Brown about potential vacancies.

Neither party denied the talks, though Vermeulen said there were “no negotiations”, and Brown has said he isn’t planning on changing his driver line-up.

Both defending champion Lando Norris and Australian Piastri are under contract until at least 2027 and 2028 respectively.

But that hasn’t been enough to shut the rumours down.

For Vermeulen, conversations with rival teams — especially when those conversations become public — serve a second end.

Verstappen needs leverage.

For the last two seasons, Toto Wolff’s public interest in signing Verstappen has been useful. In attempting to exert influence, he’s been able to brandish a Mercedes switch as a threat.

But Russell now appears fixed at Mercedes following last year’s contract renewal and his title position this year, as does championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton locked down, is also a no-go.

On paper that applies to McLaren too, but public confirmation of talks with Brown has been enough for the possibility, however remote, to remain alive.

In the fog of war that is the Formula 1 silly season, that might be enough.

The idea that McLaren might be interested isn’t surprising. Verstappen is the best of his generation and at the peak of his powers — that’s his power in the driver market.

Every team will have done its due diligence on his availability regardless of the improbability of snaring him. Brown would not be doing his job as CEO if he didn’t entertain a conversation about Verstappen’s availability.

It’s likewise the job of every manager to know the lay of the land to ensure their driver is always best placed in the event of change.

Unfortunately for Piastri, Norris’s status as world champion means Verstappen was always going to be connected to the Australian’s seat.

(Photo by Peter Fox/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

The link has sparked some wild and improbable rumours, including that Piastri could pre-emptively quit the team or that he is subject to a performance clause that could see him ousted despite being one place and only 15 points behind Norris on the title table.

He had been leading Norris on points before Silverstone, where blameless first-lap contract with Liam Lawson — and then McLaren taking two laps to pit him for a new front wing — effectively ended his chance of scoring points.

Sources close to Piastri have described these ideas to Fox Sports as “purely speculative” and pointed out both Piastri and McLaren have been publicly strongly supportive of their ongoing relationship.

“I’ve got a contract in place,” Piastri said in Silverstone. “I’ve had multiple reassurances that the team are very happy with me, and I’m very happy with the team, so for me, I’m very happy where I am, happy with the situation I’m in, and I’m just trying to continue the success that we’ve had in the last few years.”

In a podcast released last week, Brown denied interest in signing Verstappen.

“I’ve got two awesome racing drivers. If I had a third car, I’d sign him in a heartbeat, but I don’t have a third car,” he told the Up to Speed podcast.

“I couldn’t be happier with Lando and Oscar. We won 14 races last year. [They are] two drivers that came down to the last race of the year with the chance to win the championship. They get along great. They set a great tone in the garage. I’m not making any driver changes.

“Max is an awesome talent, but I think Lando and Oscar have both demonstrated they can beat him straight up.”

Asked specifically whether he would turn down the chance to sign Verstappen because he has both Norris and Piastri signed, Brown was unequivocal.

“Yeah, [that’s right],” he said. “No, no; I don’t have a seat available.

“If a seat was available, then of course you have that conversation, but Lando and Oscar have their names engraved on their race seats, and they haven’t emptied out their lockers, so they’re not going anywhere.”

You can find wriggle room in almost any denial if you try hard enough, but that’s about as definitive as you can get.

Brown won’t rule out Verstappen move | 00:27

WHAT WOULD IT TAKE — AND WHERE DOES IT END?

Some will see parallels between this scenario and that of Daniel Ricciardo in his final season with McLaren in 2022.

Ricciardo had another year on his contract but ultimately made way for Piastri, who escaped the remarkably limp clutches of Alpine after the French-owned team failed to offer him a valid contract.

There are some key differences, however.

Ricciardo was contracted as a star senior driver to lead the way alongside young gun Norris. Instead he underdelivered and was outperformed by the future championship-winning Briton.

Piastri is the younger driver in the line-up and an almost equal match for Norris — by several metrics they’re the most closely matched teammates in the sport this season.

It’s also worth remembering that Brown wasn’t afraid to criticise Ricciardo in 2022 when it became clear his form wasn’t improving in his second season. He also publicly raised the prospect of cutting his contract short.

This time around Brown is unequivocally backing Piastri.

As brutal as the Ricciardo saga was, McLaren was tactful in the way it dealt with it. When Piastri was signed — preliminarily in early June and then finally in early July — he wasn’t guaranteed a race seat in 2023 in case Ricciardo refused to be bought out of his contract. He could have spent another year on the sidelines waiting for his compatriot’s deal to expire.

(Photo by Mark Thompson/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

A similar situation obviously won’t be possible with Verstappen — and it’s hard to imagine Piastri’s camp accepting being pushed out of the team.

Despite Verstappen’s obvious appeal as a driver, it’s also hard to see McLaren welcoming that kind of disruption to a team that’s had its culture painstakingly rebuilt around two drivers who appear to buy in completely to the team-first ethos.

Though Verstappen’s single-mindedness is somewhat exaggerated, there are question marks over his support team, in particular Jos Verstappen.

Think of the noise Verstappen Senior made over Christian Horner, for example, until the team boss was sacked.

Consider further, now, how things have gone for Red Bull Racing not just since Horner left but dating back to when Jos began throwing his weight around calling for sackings in early 2024. McLaren might be wondering if the potential benefits outweigh the cost when it already has a highly rated line-up of its own.

So if not McLaren, where does it end?

It’s notable that De Limburger has reported that a sabbatical or F1 retirement could both be back on the cards for Verstappen after the Dutchman appeared to walk back those prospects only last month. His frustrations with the 2026 engines are already well known, and if he can’t get his hands on a competitive car in even the medium-term future, then quitting the sport must be a realistic option.

Alternatively, if he wants to bide his time without sitting out, renegotiating his Red Bull Racing contract could be the goal. After all, he’s worth more now, as a four-time champion, than he was after clinching his first title in 2021, when he signed his last extension.

For now, though, creating the appearance of possibilities is key.

For frustrated Verstappen, leverage is everything.

Max Verstappen will be able to exit his Red Bull Racing contract this year, deepening speculation over a…

[573
64,63,817,813,816,85
post-788658","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-formula-1","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-f1","tag-formula-1","tag-formula1","tag-sports
["GET
