Two pedestrians were “lucky to be alive” after a truck lost its load on the North-South Motorway north of Adelaide, police say.<\/p>\n
Police said the incident occurred when vehicles merged into the southbound lane in front of a truck laden with concrete slabs just after 10:30am on Friday.<\/p>\n
Footage released by SA Police shows the truck losing its load, sending two 15-tonne concrete segments onto the roadway, near Bolivar.<\/p>\n
The slabs then impacted three cars parked on the side of the road.<\/p>\n
“Two pedestrians were standing next to a broken-down vehicle on the shoulder of the road and were struck by the parked cars,” a police spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
“One of the pedestrians was taken to hospital by ambulance with a suspected broken arm. Two other people sustained minor injuries.<\/p>\n
“Police are amazed that no one was killed during this incident.”<\/p>\n
All vehicles were towed away and a crane cleared the scene.<\/p>\n
Heavy Vehicle Enforcement Unit officers attended and examined the scene and vehicles.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure and Transport said the truck involved in the incident was a private contractor transporting concrete segments for the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project.<\/p>\n
The department reported the incident to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.<\/p>\n
“Out of an abundance of caution, transportation of concrete segments has been suspended until further notice,” the spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure and Transport said.<\/p>\n
“This temporary suspension will have no impact on delivery timelines or budget for the T2D Project.”<\/p>\n
Police said the incident was a reminder for motorists to allow heavy vehicles the space and stopping distance they need.<\/p>\n
“Drivers transporting loads must ensure they are properly secured before commencing their journey,” police said.<\/p>\n
