Robert MacIntyre’s opening round at the Genesis Scottish Open needed his head to hold up just as much as his swing did. <\/p>\n

He did so and played a three-under-par 67 opening round. After that, the Scottish golfer credited acceptance and a settled life away from the golf course for his steady round under pressure.<\/p>\n

“It’s like that shot on 18, my last hole there. Hit a lovely 5-iron, a couple of yards right of the target. I think it’s landed just short of the pin on the slope. It’s ran all the way down and come back in the bunker. If I’m not in a good head space, I’m going ballistic. How unlucky is that? Yeah, it’s a bit unlucky,” he said after his opening round, per Flushing It on X.<\/p>\n

MacIntyre saved par on that par-4 18th hole. But it wasn’t just the 18th hole. He remained calm after three-putting his opening hole for bogey and was one over through three. He made five birdies and only one more bogey in the remaining holes to close the round in a good position.<\/p>\n

“But I know I’ve got the skill and tools to deal with the next shot,” he said. <\/a>“Whereas when I’m not in that mind frame, it’s like, I’m dead in here, I’m in the worst spot possible. But when the mind frame is the way it is now, I know I can hit those bunker shots. Just go and do it.”<\/p>\n

Now, after the opening round, the World No. 20 golfer is trailing only two shots behind the leader, Tom Kim,\u00a0Bernd Wiesberger,\u00a0Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, and\u00a0Rasmus H\u00f8jgaard. <\/p>\n

How MacIntyre’s temper cost him earlier this year<\/p>\n

MacIntyre’s calm reaction on Thursday stands out because it hasn’t always gone that way. And the 2026 season has given him more than one reminder of what the alternative looks like.<\/p>\n

The most infamous example came at the Masters in April. MacIntyre made a quadruple-bogey nine on the par-5 15th after finding the water twice, and cameras caught him making a rude gesture toward the green. Augusta National officials reportedly reprimanded him for his behavior.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t a one-off. Back in January at the Sony Open, MacIntyre snapped his putter in frustration during the second round after missing a short par putt. It forced him to putt forcing him to finish the tournament using a backup and cost him a bogey in the next hole. <\/p>\n

And this week at the Renaissance Club, where he won the Scottish Open in 2024, a different Bob MacIntyre showed up.<\/p>\n

“Everyone knows that I’m like a kettle, always boiling away, ready to erupt,” MacIntyre said. <\/p>\n

“It’s one of them ones where I’ve just got to, when life is good off the golf course, that’s one part, and it’s going on the golf course and it’s being able to accept \u2014 my biggest thing is acceptance. And everyone is the same. If you can accept the bad, you probably won’t play many bad rounds of golf.”<\/p>\n
