rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sydney\u2019s<\/a> crime networks have had their communication lines severed after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/police-6iyz\" class=\"sc-jNzrEP eIMCEl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">police<\/a> dismantled the state\u2019s largest supplier of \u201cmurder phones\u201d, sending a text directly to thousands of alleged criminals in the process.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/nsw-police-jdi\" class=\"sc-jNzrEP eIMCEl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NSW Police<\/a> established Strike Force Harskamp in April last year to investigate the VIP Network, a group suspected of importing communication devices from overseas, encrypting them, and selling them for use in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/crime-5w4\" class=\"sc-jNzrEP eIMCEl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">criminal activity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ee8e8bbb256bdb223cdbb10559fddda417cf4496ac3437b73ceeaedda8dd0e09.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Police sent out a message across Sydney\u2019s organised crime networks after busting a distributor of encrypted devices.\u00a0NSW Police<\/p>\n<p>Investigators will allege the VIP Network sold about 1000 devices a year for $2000 each, bringing in an estimated annual haul of $2 million.<\/p>\n<p>The highly customised phones are stripped of their forward-facing cameras, use completely unregistered SIM cards, and feature a secure dead-switch function designed to wipe the phone if the wrong passcode is entered.<\/p>\n<p>It will be further alleged that the devices were used by the buyers to plan crimes, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/drugs-5wj\" class=\"sc-jNzrEP eIMCEl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drug<\/a> supply, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/homicide-26l6\" class=\"sc-jNzrEP eIMCEl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">murder<\/a>, and kidnapping.<\/p>\n<p>Superintendent Peter Faux said that organised crime groups \u201cneed these devices to communicate with, coordinate with, and operate their business\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re alleging these devices have been used in numerous of the worst crimes that can be committed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Faux said more than 3000 Chinese-made mobile devices loaded with encrypted operating systems, directly for Sydney\u2019s underworld and distributed by VIP had been identified.<\/p>\n<p>He said authorities believed the network was being coordinated by offshore criminals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/5654c1e8443e3711332c80b9a73873cdd8a47ee91fe3e5bed53dfa3a33d69e55.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Three men have been arrested.\u00a0NSW Police<\/p>\n<p>In the past month, police intercepted more than 60 devices and accessories from search warrants in Botany and Banksmeadow.<\/p>\n<p>And at about 7am on Thursday, police carried out three search warrants in Kogarah, Bexley, and Rockdale, seizing a further 35 devices, almost $35,000 in cash, and luxury watches.<\/p>\n<p>Two men, aged 25 and 26, were arrested in Kogarah, and a 29-year-old man was arrested in Bexley.<\/p>\n<p>All three were charged with participating in a criminal group, dealing with the proceeds of crime, and possessing encrypted devices for criminal purposes.<\/p>\n<p>They were all refused bail and will appear in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/courts-hn7\" class=\"sc-jNzrEP eIMCEl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">court<\/a> today.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday evening, after the arrests, police broadcast a message across the VIP Network\u2019s web of encrypted devices \u2014 the unwelcome message intended to be received by every \u201cmurder phone\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNSW Police Force has linked this Signal or Threema account with the VIP Phones encrypted phone supplier,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetectives from State Crime Command will continue to identify, investigate and prosecute all persons connected with the VIP Phones Criminal Network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ce28d01e3967f9ee25569a09c425e2ff221f9ae81519551fbe9f702de4a4909a.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Cash, watches, and devices were seized.\u00a0NSW Police<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese devices will now be a part of the ongoing investigation as to who is using them and what they are doing,\u201d Faux said.<\/p>\n<p>Police allege that rival gangs, including the Alameddines, the Coconut Cartel, and the emerging Badger network, have all been heavily relying on these exact VIP encrypted devices to conduct Sydney\u2019s bloody ongoing turf war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy dismantling this network, detectives have removed a key enabler of organised crime in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/australia-news\/nsw\" class=\"sc-jNzrEP eIMCEl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NSW<\/a> and reaffirmed our commitment to disrupting those who believe they can hide behind technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout these devices, it\u2019s extremely challenging for these criminals to coordinate these
