Carlton is said to be \u201cirate\u201d after being on the wrong end of a howler in their loss to Hawthorn<\/a>, reigniting calls for the AFL to consider returning to a three-umpire system.<\/p>\n

The incident in question came midway through the first quarter when Jack Ginnivan marked the ball 50m out from goal. <\/p>\n

It was going to be a major challenge for Ginnivan to convert from that point in dour conditions, so the Hawks forward faked a handball to Blake Hardwick which then prompted Carlton\u2019s Adam Cerra to come off the mark. <\/p>\n

Cerra was only further incentivised to do so given experienced umpire Matt Stevic appeared to say play on, but then pinged Cerra as he went to pressure Ginnivan and awarded a 50m penalty. <\/p>\n

While Carlton was belted 103-39 in the end, Jack Riewoldt \u2014 who labelled it a \u201cdisgrace\u201d and \u201cunacceptable\u201d call at the time \u2014 said it was a big decision in the context of the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the grand scheme of things you go, \u2018What is it? 64 points. It isn\u2019t that big a deal\u2019. But at that point of the game it was pouring with rain and goals were extremely hard to come by,\u201d he said on Fox Footy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt sunk Carlton and momentum sort of stopped for them. It\u2019s a horrible decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

North Melbourne great David King called in a \u201cnew low\u201d in what has been a substandard year of umpiring in the AFL, and said that while it was an obvious mistake from Stevic the bigger issue was that he didn\u2019t simply apply common sense and reverse the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did hand gesture to play on. He\u2019s just made a mistake. Common sense would have said just stop and call it back,\u201d King said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a static play anyway, it wasn\u2019t a disadvantage to either party. We would have all accepted it… to roll forward with it is almost the bigger error for me… you had to have the courage to call it back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Ginnivan kicked the easiest of goals and Super Saturday Live\u2019s Jay Clark reported on Fox Footy that the decision left the Blues \u201cirate\u201d even after fulltime.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just popped my head into the Carlton rooms on the way into the Hawks rooms. It\u2019s fair to say they are irate about this decision. It was the first topic brought up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI clearly heard play and then you saw the arms come up to signal play on.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem is we\u2019ve been seeing this all season. Every second week we\u2019ve been talking about one of these howlers and it brings scrutiny on the umpire system.\u201d<\/p>\n

To that effect, Clark asked whether the AFL \u2014 despite being \u201cadamant\u201d it is the way to go \u2014 could consider moving away from the four-umpire system. <\/p>\n

Riewoldt was not sure that moving back to three umpires would have the desired effect, adding that the officials themselves \u201care the best to ask\u201d.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, it is worth referring back to the comments from triple Grand Final umpire \u2018Razor\u2019 Ray Chamberlain on AFL 360 late last month<\/a> when the topic of reverting back to a three-umpire system came up.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s talk about the idea of going back to three and use some numbers and say: \u2018The bottom 10, they\u2019re not ready yet, they need to be umpiring more state league football, we\u2019re going to put them down there, continue to coach and educate\u2019 \u2026 just be aware what you\u2019re saying is the top eight of the top 12 umpires that currently hold that list together \u2013 and have done for 20 years \u2013 they\u2019re gone,\u201d he said at the time. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey can\u2019t umpire a three-umpire system. It is, exponentially, physically harder than a four. It busts you. They are 50 years of age, those blokes. They can\u2019t umpire a three. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo you\u2019re going to get rid of 10, (another) eight are going to fall over and they\u2019re out, you\u2019ve got to go back to the best eight that you had \u2013 that you said \u2018weren\u2019t good enough\u2019 \u2013 and bring them back in. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going to umpire in a three-umpire system where they\u2019ve now got to make 25 per cent more free kicks \u2013 because there\u2019s not four of them out there, there\u2019s only three \u2013 they\u2019re physically in a worse position than what they are in the four, they\u2019re knackered, they\u2019re making more decisions from poorer positions that you\u2019re saying they can\u2019t make those decisions now. <\/p>\n
