South African midfielder Jayden Adams, who represented his country at the ongoing World Cup, has tragically died at the age of 25.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,\u201d Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said in a statement. <\/p>\n
\u201cSouth African football has lost one of its brightest young talents,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
A cause of death has not yet been released.<\/p>\n
However, police said they had opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was found at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. <\/p>\n
\u201cCircumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation,\u201d Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk told reporters.<\/p>\n
Adams played in all three of South Africa\u2019s group-stage matches at the World Cup, as Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32 for the first time, but did not feature in the knockout defeat by Canada. <\/p>\n
\u201cJayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction,\u201d the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) said in a statement. <\/p>\n
\u201cHis passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large.<\/p>\n
\u201cSouth African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer. May his soul rest in eternal peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) also paid tribute, saying on X: \u201cFootball has lost one of its own.\u201d <\/p>\n
He was also part of the South Africa squad that finished third at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n
FIFA President Gianni Infantino offered his condolences via Instagram.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation\u2019s historic FIFA World Cup campaign,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
Born in Cape Town, Adams came through the Stellenbosch FC academy and became the club\u2019s first youth graduate to sign a professional contract in August 2020. <\/p>\n
He went on to make 139 appearances for the Cape Winelands side and helped them win the Carling Knockout in 2023 before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. <\/p>\n
At Sundowns, the midfielder added a Premiership title and a CAF Champions League crown to his list of honours.<\/p>\n
His death comes less than a month after the passing of his grandmother, on the eve of South Africa\u2019s Group A match against Czechia at Atlanta Stadium. <\/p>\n
\u201cJayden started in the match against Czechia and gave his all while carrying the burden of losing his grandmother,\u201d the South African Football Association said in a statement on June 27.<\/p>\n
