July is a big month at the movies, and it can be a big month for streaming at home too. HBO Max has a few heavy hitters from this year streaming this month, including one of 2026\u2019s best films. It also has a perfect movie for those still celebrating the year of Anne Hathaway as the days until \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d tick down.<\/p>\n

Here are the seven best new movies streaming on HBO Max in July.<\/p>\n

\"ArmyUniversal Pictures<\/p>\n

\u201cArmy of Darkness\u201d<\/p>\n

All movie sequels should be as brave as Sam Raimi\u2019s \u201cArmy of Darkness,\u201d an \u201cEvil Dead 2\u201d follow-up that hurls Bruce Campbell\u2019s Ash Williams through time to the Middle Ages. A franchise that started as a straight-up horror series turns into a medieval comedy, starring a modern warrior as he hacks and slashes through undead skeletal hordes. It\u2019s a bold decision for the franchise, yet Raimi\u2019s voice remains fully intact.<\/p>\n

\"Zendaya(A24)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Drama\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Drama\u201d is the kind of movie we don\u2019t get often anymore \u2014\u00a0a dark comic drama made for adults that turns into a $130 million-grossing conversation piece. The film, led by two fantastic performances from Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, doesn\u2019t shy away from tough conversations, placing its characters in a moral, romantic and psychological pressure cooker that builds to a wonderfully explosive third act. While it certainly has its fun with morbid humor, \u201cThe Drama\u201d balances its comedy with genuine insight, making it still one of the year\u2019s best films.<\/p>\n

\"Toni (A24)<\/p>\n

\u201cHereditary\u201d<\/p>\n

Ari Aster\u2019s \u201cHereditary\u201d is one of the most influential horror movies of the 2010s, with its fingerprints found on a number of films since (Curry Barker was notably inspired by \u201cHereditary\u201d when making \u201cObsession,\u201d<\/a> saying \u201cit really shocked my system\u201d). It\u2019s not hard to see how this movie came to be. Aster\u2019s tense, dreary and sometimes funny movie is filled to the brim with strong performances and imagery that will make you afraid of your house\u2019s dark corners. It\u2019s memorable, impactful and terrifying \u2014\u00a0truly one of the great horror films of the century.<\/p>\n

\u201cLee Cronin\u2019s The Mummy\u201d<\/p>\n

We all, of course, know Lee Cronin, the man who brought the deadites to an apartment building in the twistedly fun \u201cEvil Dead Rise.\u201d But we have not all yet had the chance to meet Lee Cronin\u2019s mummy in \u201cLee Cronin\u2019s The Mummy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film stars Jack Reynor and Laia Costa as two parents who are reunited with their young daughter years after her abduction, only to realize that a parent\u2019s worst night has befallen her: She\u2019s been turned into a mummy. That doesn\u2019t stop them from taking her home, where the possessed and decaying child wreaks havoc on their family, including dear old grandma. Not everything in \u201cLee Cronin\u2019s The Mummy\u201d works, but the director somehow cranks up the mean-spiritedness he exhibited in \u201cEvil Dead Rise\u201d to make a delightfully unhinged horror flick that is well worth the watch. He\u2019s a true student of Raimi.<\/p>\n

\"Cooper(Lionsgate)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Long Walk\u201d<\/p>\n

In \u201cThe Long Walk,\u201d director Francis Lawrence and screenwriter JT Mollner adapt a Stephen King story with a simple premise: 50 teenage boys enter a contest to see who can walk across the country the longest without slowing down or stopping. The losers are executed, while the winner gets a single wish.<\/p>\n

There are a lot of ways this film could become a slog, but Lawrence finds lightning in a bottle with \u201cThe Long Walk,\u201d boosted by a slate of excellent performances \u2014 particularly from leading actors Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson. <\/p>\n

\u201cMarc by Sofia\u201d<\/p>\n

Sofia Coppola is a generational filmmaker, a talent behind acclaimed films like \u201cThe Virgin Suicides,\u201d \u201cLost in Translation\u201d and \u201cMarie Antoinette.\u201d Yet \u201cMarc by Sofia\u201d saw her take on a documentary feature for the first time, peering into the life of iconic fashion designer Marc Jacobs. It\u2019s a good pairing \u2014 a renowned designer captured by a filmmaker with a strong visual eye. It\u2019s hard to imagine many other movies this year being quite so chic, non-fiction or not.<\/p>\n

\u201cOcean\u2019s 8\u201d<\/p>\n

Anne Hathaway has a big year between her already-released \u201cMother Mary\u201d and \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d and the soon-to-come \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d \u201cThe End of Oak Street\u201d and \u201cVerity.\u201d While you\u2019re waiting on some of those (and the star-studded<\/a> \u201cOcean\u2019s 11\u201d prequel), you can check out Hathaway\u2019s role in \u201cOcean\u2019s 8,\u201d a fun, female-led side film within the iconic heist franchise.<\/p>\n
