Mick Jagge<\/a>r reflected on getting old, and said there\u2019s nothing good about the natural process.<\/p>\n

The Rolling Stones<\/a> singer \u2013 who\u2019ll pass his 83th birthday later in July \u2013 recently shared his thoughts on aging with The\u00a0New York Times<\/a>. But reflections on his matured songwriting skills suggested his thoughts on the matter might be more varied.<\/p>\n

Asked what was good about getting older, physically or metaphysically, Jagger replied: \u201cThere\u2019s nothing good about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

To the follow-up question, \u201cNothing? Wisdom?\u201d he said: \u201cI forgot all my wisdom. I might have had a couple of pearls drop, but I\u2019ve already forgotten what they are!<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, no, it\u2019s not particularly pleasant. You can\u2019t do things as quickly as you want to. Physically you\u2019ve got to be more careful. You know, when you\u2019re playing football, they put you in goal a lot. I\u2019m not very good at it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Jagger went on to consider what he\u2019d learned about his larger-than-life rock star role over the years. \u201cYou\u2019ve heard all these stories about method actors,\u201c he said. \u201cThey take it to the absolute extreme, so they\u2019re like the character all the time, and then after the movie\u2019s over, they\u2019re still in character. It takes a long time to slough off the character.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo which character do you go back to? Is he always going to carry some of that character in his \u2018true\u2019 character, whatever that is? This is the show business dichotomy and it\u2019s something you learn to live with, and you always hope that you\u2019re a so-called normal person underneath.\u201d<\/p>\n

He confirmed that being one of the world\u2019s greatest rock stars came with perks, but argued: \u201c[I]t\u2019s not about the perks. It\u2019s about being these several characters. You\u2019re the character that plays the theater, you\u2019re the character who does the interview, you\u2019re the character in the stadium, you\u2019re the character in the recording studio, you\u2019re the character writing the song.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mick Jagger Learned to Blend Songs About Relationships and Politics<\/p>\n

On the subject of songwriting, Jagger appeared to accept the concept that being older was a positive thing. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have written any of these songs when I was 30, honestly,\u201d he said of his more recent compositions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve also gotten into this habit of doing songs that are about personal relationships, and then I throw a verse about politics in there. That\u2019s a trick I\u2019ve learned from other songwriters, because nobody wants to hear a whole song about politics or social comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cA blues song like \u2018Rough and Twisted,\u2019 you talk about women and everything, but then you throw in stuff that\u2019s obviously political: ‘The only club was called conspiracy \/ What they wanted was tyranny.’ So you find yourself using these tricks.\u201d<\/p>\n
