Ex-Parramatta Eels<\/a> and Cronulla Sharks<\/a> player Karl Lovell died on Sunday at the age of 48, following a battle with lung cancer.<\/p>\n

The New Zealand-born forward leaves behind his wife Megan and their two daughters.<\/p>\n

Lovell debuted in the NRL<\/a> with the Eels in 1997, making his debut against North Sydney at just 19 years of age. <\/p>\n

He went on to play 37 matches for Parramatta over two seasons, featuring heavily in their 1997 and 1998 finals campaigns.<\/p>\n

His football career later took him to England, where he played for Sheffield and the short-lived Huddersfield-Sheffield merger side. <\/p>\n

Lovell returned to Australia in 2001 to join the Northern Eagles before wrapping up his NRL career with the Cronulla Sharks. <\/p>\n

In 2002, he helped guide the Sharks to a preliminary final, where they ultimately fell to the Warriors.<\/p>\n

After retiring from professional rugby league, Lovell returned to his junior club, the Toukley Hawks, dedicating his time to mentoring the local community.<\/p>\n
