{"id":796798,"date":"2026-07-13T04:22:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T04:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/796798\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T04:22:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T04:22:00","slug":"economists-and-newsrooms-collaborate-to-lie-about-australias-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/796798\/","title":{"rendered":"Economists and newsrooms collaborate to lie about Australia\u2019s economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Australia\u2019s media has hit a new low in deceptive reporting, but with one positive note, as <a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/profile-on\/alan-austin,67\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alan Austin<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>PROMINENT economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sauleslake.info\/about-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Saul Eslake<\/a> declared on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6XDU7NghD4g&amp;t=14s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sky News<\/a> last Monday that \u201cthe OECD has shown that Australia has had the highest core inflation rate of all but one of the 38 members of the OECD\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Eslake was apparently commenting on that day\u2019s news <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/content\/dam\/oecd\/en\/data\/insights\/statistical-releases\/2026\/7\/consumer-prices-oecd-07-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">release<\/a> from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/en\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">OECD<\/a>) titled Consumer Price Index, 6 July 2026.<\/p>\n<p>With his usual confidence, Eslake criticised the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rba.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reserve Bank<\/a>\u2019s management of interest rates and the Federal Government\u2019s first home buyers scheme, adding a gratuitous reference to a budget measure renegotiated after last year\u2019s Economic Roundtable as a \u201cbroken promise\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the thing. The OECD report did not say what Eslake claimed. It showed Australia\u2019s core inflation \u2013 all CPI items excluding food and energy \u2013 at 3.5%. It also showed Belgium\u2019s at 4.1%, Mexico\u2019s at 4.3%, Lithuania\u2019s at 4.6%, Colombia\u2019s at 6.5%, Iceland\u2019s at 6.7% and Turkiye\u2019s at a punishing 30.6%.<\/p>\n<p>Australia is not second bottom. Nowhere near.<\/p>\n<p>  <a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/article-display\/australias-newsrooms-continue-to-suppress-vital-information,21229\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/article-21229-thumb.jpg\" alt=\"Australia\u2019s newsrooms continue to suppress vital information\" class=\"w-100\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The implication \u2013 that Australia\u2019s economic management is deficient \u2013 is therefore not supported.<\/p>\n<p>So how did this arise? Did the economist not read the OECD document, but instead rely on the mendacious report from\u00a0the day before in the Financial Review\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.afr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AFR<\/a>)? Or did he trust a copycat fabricated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/finance\/economy\/australian-economy\/australias-core-inflation-now-second-highest-in-world-expert-blames-spending\/news-story\/f3dbb663d23ed3429e22d5e5a5e2ac15#:~:text=Australia&#039;s%20inflation%20rate%20is%20officially,staying%20above%20p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">story<\/a> in the Murdoch media that morning? Or did he concoct the false narrative himself in compliance with Sky News\u2019 editorial policy of only ever broadcasting economic \u201cnews\u201d damaging to Labor?<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t know because our requests for an explanation went unanswered.<\/p>\n<p>Malicious falsehoods nationwide<\/p>\n<p>All the newsrooms these days fall over each other trying to replicate every false story any one of them creates. This happened with the dire threats of <a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/politics\/politics-display\/abc-news-leads-the-media-shonks-in-fomenting-fear-of-recession,20943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recession<\/a> in January and February, <a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/politics\/politics-display\/the-richer-australians-get-the-sadder-they-become-data-shows,21024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">anxiety<\/a> in March and April over interest rates when they were smack in the middle of the optimum band, <a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/politics\/politics-display\/the-glaring-problems-with-labors-dreadful-appalling-terrible-2026-budget,21113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hyperventilating<\/a> over the May budget, warning it would inevitably cause house prices to <a href=\"https:\/\/thenightly.com.au\/australia\/why-labors-changes-to-negative-gearing-and-capital-gains-tax-wont-make-housing-affordable-for-the-young-c-22342908?utm_source=thewest&amp;utm_medium=homepage-curation&amp;utm_campaign=thenightly-curation&amp;utm_term=article&amp;utm_con\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rise<\/a> and simultaneously to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brokernews.com.au\/news\/breaking-news\/budget-tax-hit-to-send-house-prices-into-freefall-289397.aspx\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fall<\/a> \u2014 and now core inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Headlines last week included:<\/p>\n<p>\t\u2018Australia has had the highest core inflation rate out of all but one of the OECD members\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/opinion\/australia-has-had-the-highest-core-inflation-rate-out-of-all-but-one-of-the-oecd-members\/video\/fc30af82bc6d188d5c4ae292fb509538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sky News, 6 July<\/a>);<br \/>\n\t\u2018Australia\u2019s core inflation now second highest in world, expert blames spending\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/finance\/economy\/australian-economy\/australias-core-inflation-now-second-highest-in-world-expert-blames-spending\/news-story\/f3dbb663d23ed3429e22d5e5a5e2ac15#:~:text=Australia&#039;s%20inflation%20rate%20is%20officially,staying%20above%20p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">news.com.au, 6 July<\/a>);<br \/>\n\t\u2018Shock inflation ranking. Australia becomes international outlier\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2018077645766662\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nine News, 6 July<\/a>); and<br \/>\n\t\u2018Australia\u2019s inflation among highest in world\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/Australia%E2%80%99s%20inflation%20among%20highest%20in%20world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Yahoo Finance, 6 July<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The AFR fake chart<\/p>\n<p>This latest spate of blatant lies appears to have started with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/policy\/economy\/australia-tops-world-inflation-rankings-20260703-p60cfd?utm_source=afr-web&amp;utm_medium=share_article&amp;utm_campaign=policy&amp;utm_content=afralldigital%2Cwebbasic&amp;utm_term=product_feature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">article<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/by\/michael-read-p4yw7h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michael Read<\/a> in the AFR headed, \u2018Australia tops inflation rankings among all major developed economies\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Read claimed:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Australia has become an international inflation outlier [with] the equal-highest core inflation rate among major developed economies and the second-highest across all advanced economies, behind only Iceland&#8230;\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He included this chart to illustrate the concept he wanted readers to swallow:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/_lib\/slir\/w450-c1632x1199\/https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/sc\/AFR%20core%20inflation%20July%202026.jpg\" style=\"height:606px; width:825px\" data-img-tablet=\"\/_lib\/slir\/w750-c1632x1199\/https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/sc\/AFR%20core%20inflation%20July%202026.jpg\" data-img-desk=\"\/_lib\/slir\/w1000-c1632x1199\/https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/sc\/AFR%20core%20inflation%20July%202026.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afr.com\/policy\/economy\/australia-tops-world-inflation-rankings-20260703-p60cfd?utm_source=afr-web&amp;utm_medium=share_article&amp;utm_campaign=policy&amp;utm_content=afralldigital%2Cwebbasic&amp;utm_term=product_feature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AFR<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The obvious ruse is selecting an arbitrary group of 34 economies plus the Euro Area and claiming they are all comparable. It left out seven OECD members and many other advanced economies.<\/p>\n<p>Disturbingly, it used May data for some countries (Australia, Luxembourg, Netherlands) but June for others (Belgium, Portugal, Spain) \u2014 when <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/steel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">commodity<\/a> prices were different. May numbers were available for all, except New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>A far more valid exercise is to compare all advanced economies, those with United Nations Development Programme (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">UNDP<\/a>)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Human Development Index<\/a> numbers above 0.76, for which core inflation numbers for May are published at <a href=\"http:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/country-list\/core-inflation-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tradingeconomics.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are 60 of these, ranging from Costa Rica at 0.28% to Argentina at 32%. These include all 38 OECD members plus the economies that the AFR wanted concealed. See chart below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/_lib\/slir\/w450-c2096x882\/https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/sc\/All%20dev%20core%20inflation%202026B%20IA.jpg\" style=\"height:347px; width:825px\" data-img-tablet=\"\/_lib\/slir\/w750-c2096x882\/https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/sc\/All%20dev%20core%20inflation%202026B%20IA.jpg\" data-img-desk=\"\/_lib\/slir\/w1000-c2096x882\/https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/sc\/All%20dev%20core%20inflation%202026B%20IA.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Data source: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">UNDP<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, country names are difficult to read on this chart, but that\u2019s not important. What matters is that Australia is not the second-worst. Its core inflation of 3.57% ranks 22nd, below the average of 4.27%.<\/p>\n<p>The AFR article went on to falsely claim that Australia is still in a cost-of-living crisis and inflation is uncontrolled. They want us to forget inflation was above 10% for much of the time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Senators_and_Members\/Parliamentarian?MPID=ZD4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">John Howard<\/a>\u00a0was trying to be Treasurer in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>The article ended with another economist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/john-simon-economist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">John Simon<\/a>, not just implying Australia\u2019s inflation is excessive but actually saying:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s been experienced in Australia is not a global phenomenon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actual data, which economists called upon by the newsrooms seem reluctant to access, shows Australia\u2019s inflation is indeed global and not an outlier.<\/p>\n<p>  <a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/article-display\/newsrooms-destroy-life-satisfaction-while-trying-to-report-it,21172\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/article-21172-thumb.jpg\" alt=\"Newsrooms destroy life satisfaction while trying to report it\" class=\"w-100\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>ABC News changes its tune<\/p>\n<p>In a surprising bright spot last week, the ABC\u2019s business reporter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/alan-kohler\/167112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alan Kohler<\/a>, did a full 180-degree turn and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tyT9BKwGB8w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a> that Australia is not heading for a recession after all.\u00a0 The economy is so strong, in fact, it needs dampening:<\/p>\n<p>If you spent your time on the websites of the Bureau of Statistics, the Reserve Bank and the ASX, you&#8217;d think things were going fine&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Economic growth is a solid if unexciting 2.5%, job growth is reasonably strong and unemployment is down&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Inflation is coming down, consumer spending is growing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the economy is doing so well, the Reserve Bank has been raising interest rates to slow it down.<\/p>\n<p>This is most welcome, as just last month this <a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/politics\/politics-display\/flailing-newsrooms-flog-fears-of-a-fictional-recession,21144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">column<\/a> counted Kohler among the shonks and charlatans in the newsrooms who had issued ridiculous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ai0Du4nuHDs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warnings<\/a> of an imminent recession.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s hope his colleagues join him. They have some catching up to do, however, with economics reporter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/gareth-hutchens\/12002796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gareth Hutchens<\/a> recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-01\/households-facing-heavy-home-loan-interest-burden-kpmg-rba\/106864920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bewailing<\/a> a slowing economy and getting a KPMG senior economist to insist things are \u2018worse now than they were almost four decades ago\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Absolute nonsense! But public economists know Australia\u2019s newsrooms want destructive falsehoods and that\u2019s what they seem happy to deliver.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/profile-on\/alan-austin,67\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alan Austin<\/a> is an Independent Australia columnist and freelance journalist.
