This figure is merely an average as some people may have been &#8216;contracted out&#8217; and will require more NI contributions to qualify for the full amount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Workplace and private pensions will supplement the State Pension in retirement, but many individuals may be depending solely on this contributory benefit as their only income in retirement, so it&#8217;s vital to understand how many years you will need to make NI contributions to receive the maximum payout.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/4_Mature-worker-writing-on-clipboard-in-supermarket.jpg\" alt=\"An elderly man is working in a supermarket \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Older people do not automatically receive full New State Pension payments of \u00a3230.25 each week when they retire(Image: Getty Images )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The State Pension age is scheduled to rise to 67 between 2026 and 2028, with a further planned increase to 68 set to occur in the mid-2040s, reports <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/full-state-pension-payments-retirement-35750575\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Daily Record<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you&#8217;re concerned about the number of years you need to work &#8211; whether retirement is far off or just around the corner &#8211; our helpful guide below should clarify how National Insurance contributions influence the amount of State Pension you&#8217;ll receive.<\/p>\n<p>How to get any New State Pension payment<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You will need at least 10 qualifying years on your National Insurance record to qualify for any State Pension, but they don\u2019t have to be 10 qualifying years in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This means for 10 years at least one or more of the following applied to you:<\/p>\n<p>you were working and paid National Insurance contributionsyou were getting National Insurance credits for example if you were unemployed, ill, a parent or a careryou were paying voluntary National Insurance contributions<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you have lived or worked abroad you might still be able to get some New State Pension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You might also qualify if you have paid married women\u2019s or widow\u2019s reduced rate contributions &#8211; find out more about this on the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/reduced-national-insurance-married-women\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"GOV.UK website here.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">GOV.UK website here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>How to get full New State Pension payments<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The first thing to understand is the term &#8216;full&#8217; means the maximum amount of New State Pension a person can receive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You will need around 35 qualifying years to receive the full New State Pension if you do not have a National Insurance record before 6 April 2016 &#8211; this may be more if you were &#8216;contracted out&#8217;, find out more <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/contracted-out\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"here.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">For people who have contributed between 10 and 35 years, they are entitled to a portion of the new State Pension, but not the full amount unless they buy additional NI years.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifying years if you are working<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">When you are working you pay National Insurance and get a qualifying year if:<\/p>\n<p>you\u2019re employed and earning over \u00a3242 a week from one employeryou\u2019re self-employed and paying NI contributions<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You might not pay National Insurance contributions because you\u2019re earning less than \u00a3242 a week. You may still get a qualifying year if you earn between \u00a3123 and \u00a3242 a week from one employer &#8211; find out more <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/national-insurance-rates-letters\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"here.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Qualifying years if you are not working<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You may get National Insurance credits if you cannot work &#8211; for example because of illness or disability, or if you\u2019re a carer or you\u2019re unemployed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You can get National Insurance credits if you:<\/p>\n<p>claim Child Benefit for a child under 12 (or under 16 before 2010)get Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance or Employment and Support Allowancereceive Carer\u2019s AllowanceIf you are not working or getting National Insurance credits<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You might be able to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions if you\u2019re not in one of these groups but want to increase your State Pension amount.
