Loader Monteith has converted it into a three-bedroom home by reusing the original stone, retooling it and relaying it to form one of two volumes.<\/p>\n<p>The second volume, clad in blackened large, has been designed to contrast with the stone form while responding to northern Scotland\u2019s harsh climate.<\/p>\n<p>The two wings \u2013 one granite, one timber \u2013 are separated by a circulation link. The stone wing houses the three bedrooms and features smaller windows for privacy and thermal efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>The other wing offers views across Dava Moor and provides the home\u2019s social spaces, including living, dining and kitchen, as well as floor-to-ceiling glazing.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-832661\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Dulnain-Loader-Monteith-Scottish-Architecture-Dapple-Photography-LR-19.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1667\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Positioned next to the River Dulnain \u2013 after which it is named \u2013 the home\u2019s construction needed to account for the natural water cycles of the riverbank. The house is built on a plinth to mitigate flooding while a patio space steps down to the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Internally, the material palette is muted and natural through the use of oak flooring, porcelain tiles and a pale blue kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside material reuse, the home has an air source heat pump, high levels of insulation and triple-glazed windows.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/loader-monteith-completes-three-bedroom-home-in-rural-angus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">integrated the remains of an existing byre<\/a> to tie a new house in rural Angus, eastern Scotland, into its landscape setting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-832656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Dulnain-Loader-Monteith-Scottish-Architecture-Dapple-Photography-LR-11.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1667\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Architect\u2019s view<\/p>\n<p>Our clients wanted a home that was easy to live in and connected to the landscape.
