{"id":797627,"date":"2026-07-13T13:39:22","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T13:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/797627\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T13:39:22","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T13:39:22","slug":"yankees-take-andy-pettittes-son-luke-in-2026-mlb-draft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/797627\/","title":{"rendered":"Yankees take Andy Pettitte&#8217;s son Luke in 2026 MLB Draft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2013 There\u2019s another Pettitte entering the Yankees organization.<\/p>\n<p>The club drafted Luke Pettitte, son of longtime Yankee left-hander and current special adviser Andy Pettitte, with its eighth-round pick Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Luke Pettitte, 21, is a two-way player who did not pitch this spring at Dallas Baptist after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, serving as the DH and hitting 16 home runs in 42 games. It remains to be seen how the Yankees will use the right-hander, assuming he signs.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Boone was genuinely excited to learn the Yankees had selected Pettitte after his team finished a sweep of the Nationals on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.36898396;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39961967\" width=\"808\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-2227283376.jpg\" alt=\"The Yankees selected Andy Pettite's son Luke, a two-way player, in the eighth round of the 2026 MLB Draft.\" class=\"wp-image-39961967\"  \/>The Yankees selected Andy Pettite\u2019s son Luke, a two-way player, in the eighth round of the 2026 MLB Draft. Oh, I\u2019m fired up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Baseball America, Pettitte has \u201csome of the best command in the 2026 [draft] class.\u201d Boone added that as a hitter, Pettitte has \u201cbig power\u201d and \u201cpretty good genes\u201d from a pitching standpoint.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.66699219;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39961983\" width=\"394\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-2207223270.jpg\" alt=\"Former Yankees great Andy Pettitte.\" class=\"wp-image-39961983\"  \/>Former Yankees great Andy Pettitte. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Andy Pettitte, who coached his sons in high school, pitched 15 seasons in pinstripes and won five World Series titles before rejoining the organization in 2023. He is around the club occasionally, working specifically with the pitching staff, and has served as an important mentor for a number of arms, including Cam Schlittler.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndy\u2019s become a really good friend now,\u201d Boone said. \u201cHe\u2019s not here, but they know he\u2019s around a lot and a big part of our staff and our culture. Getting to know Luke and his journey and his story \u2014 having Tommy John and going out and raking in college this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat fires me up. Looking forward to seeing his journey unfold. He\u2019s a great kid.
