The first full length trailer for Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu<\/a>\u2019s hotly anticipated comedy-drama Digger has been released, and with it audiences\u2019 first look at Tom Cruise<\/a>\u2019s least recognisable role since he donned a fatsuit and prosthetics for 2008\u2019s Tropic Thunder.<\/p>\n

The film will be released worldwide in early October and stars Cruise as Digger Rockwell, \u201cthe most powerful man in the world\u201d on a mission to save the world from an ecological disaster.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the trailer\u2019s launch, Cruise recently spoke to press and fans at an event the Warner Bros launch in Los Angeles, saying that it was unlike any project he had worked on before.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have never had something that could challenge me in this way and neither had Alejandro when we went in, ever,\u201d said the actor, according to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. \u201cWhen you see this film, it\u2019s totally original.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The trailer sees Cruise with a grey combover, a pot belly and a strong southern accent in the role of an oil baron whose company may have triggered an ecological disaster that could lead to nuclear war. Per the film\u2019s logline, he then \u201cembarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity\u2019s saviour before the disaster he\u2019s unleashed destroys everything\u201d.<\/p>\n

The supporting cast includes John Goodman<\/a>, Riz Ahmed<\/a>, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Sophie Wilde.<\/p>\n

At the Los Angeles event, Cruise said that his admiration of I\u00f1\u00e1rritu dates back to 2000\u2019s gritty drama Amores Perros. \u201cWhat a brilliant film. It was amazing,\u201d the actor enthused, according to Variety<\/a>. \u201cWhen I saw that film, I don\u2019t know how you all felt, but I was like, \u2018What the fuck? This guy!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThe performances. The design. The colour in the movie. Every aspect of that film was very thought out, very detailed, and you could feel the powerful human voice of someone who was incredibly skilled at what they were doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Around seven years ago, I\u00f1\u00e1rritu pitched Digger to Cruise over the course of several days where the director read the actor the script aloud.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m listening to everything that\u2019s in his mind, so that I can understand that, and then I know how to contribute to it, and bring that collaboration together. It was beautiful,\u201d Cruise said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing better than to physically and metaphorically stand on the edge of a cliff and go, \u2018Let\u2019s do this. And I trust you, and whatever we\u2019re going to do, I know this is going to be a hell of an experience,\u2019\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In a video message shown at the LA event, I\u00f1\u00e1rritu said that the idea for Digger came to him as he was finishing up his 2015 epic The Revenant, which won him the best director Oscar as well as best actor for star Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just after The Revenant when I had an idea,\u201d the director recalled. Not a script, not a film, just a relentless, recurring obsession that has endured through all these wild years. I knew who this character was.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew how he spoke, how he survived, how he seduced reality into agreeing with him. But it took me 10 years to do this film, because I wasn\u2019t looking for a story. I was looking for the right way of saying it. And it\u2019s absurd, it\u2019s dangerous, but certainly comedic, because the source of great comedy is tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n
