Big banks continue to warn housing prices<\/a> will keep falling in the coming months – and a new poll says most Australians give that the big thumbs-up.<\/p>\n

A new Resolve Political Monitor poll conducted for Nine newspapers showed that 61 per cent of people wanted a fall in housing prices, with substantial backing across the age, political, and economic spectra.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s an increase from 54 per cent in support of a price decline in June, according to Resolve\u2019s data.<\/p>\n

Auction clearances and house prices have fallen in recent weeks, though Cotality\u2019s latest data shows last week\u2019s clearances were once again up at nearly 55 per cent, after several weeks languishing below the meridian.<\/p>\n

Banks have forecast increasing property price decreases until the end of 2027, ranging between 6 and 10 per cent around the country.<\/p>\n

Sydney<\/a> and Melbourne<\/a> are forecast to see the biggest falls, but HSBC last week said<\/a> busier markets including Brisbane<\/a> and Perth<\/a> would also be affected.<\/p>\n

The weakening market has been attributed to successive interest rate<\/a> increases from the Reserve Bank of Australia<\/a>, and especially to tax changes for negative gearing and capital gains in this year\u2019s federal budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese<\/a> and Treasurer Jim Chalmers have maintained the reforms are intended to turn off investor interest and allow first home buyers, particularly younger ones, a fairer crack at entering the market.<\/p>\n

The Resolve poll found support for a decline in house prices was strongest among committed Labor voters at 73 per cent.<\/p>\n

But a majority of voters who supported the Coalition (58 per cent), One Nation (55 per cent), and the Greens (63 per cent), as well as those who were uncommitted (62 per cent) also backed a drop.<\/p>\n

Even 66 per cent of property investors wanted a decline in price, according to the poll.<\/p>\n
