{"id":799048,"date":"2026-07-14T05:16:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T05:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/799048\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T05:16:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T05:16:12","slug":"bird-flu-detection-training-to-be-rolled-out-to-sa-conservation-volunteers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/799048\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird flu detection training to be rolled out to SA conservation volunteers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Hawk-eyed citizen scientists will be trained in bird flu detection in South Australia to bolster frontline defences against the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">SA has so far recorded five confirmed cases of H5 bird flu \u2014 four in migratory giant petrels, and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-10\/h5-bird-flu-strain-detected-in-australian-seabird-for-first-time\/106901626\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106901626\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one last week in a greater crested tern, which is native to Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There have been 13 confirmed cases across the country, including seven in WA and one in New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The SA government today announced a new training program for the identification of sick birds, which will be rolled out to members of BirdLife Australia, Birds SA and the state&#8217;s Conservation Council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Under the program, volunteers from those groups will &#8220;receive specialised training to identify sick birds that may be showing signs associated with H5 bird flu in the wild&#8221;, the government said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Primary Industries Minister Clare Scriven said while exact details were still being worked out, training sessions would be offered both online and in person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Volunteers \u2014 so birders and others who are used to observing wildlife, and have got a lot of expertise and knowledge in that \u2014 [will be] partnering with government so that we can increase that surveillance even further,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The initial cohort will be about 50 and obviously we&#8217;ll look at the success of it and how we can build upon that.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Clare Scriven stands behind media microphones next to three women in a park\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/5420e5e060a744a6aabb3b32636e543f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Clare Scriven (second from left) says volunteers from Birds SA, the state&#8217;s Conservation Council and BirdLife Australia are eligible for the training.\u00a0 (ABC News: Daniel Taylor)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As per current practice, possible detections will be reported to the Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) hotline, and volunteers are being urged to avoid contact with sick wildlife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Signs of the virus in birds include inability to stand or fly, swelling and discolouration of the head, respiratory distress.
