It was an excellent year for rock and all of its moving parts and evolutions. And I bet if you were there to hear these four songs drop in 1974, you still know them by heart today. Let\u2019s get a little nostalgic!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack Water\u201d by The Doobie Brothers from \u2018What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784037790_162_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>How about a little bit of classic roots rock to get your energy up? \u201cBlack Water\u201d by The Doobie Brothers was one of the group\u2019s first No. 1 hits. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart and did similarly well in Canada and Australia. The song was written during a trip to New Orleans, and you can really hear the influence.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tVideos by American Songwriter\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I got down there [New Orleans] it was everything I had hoped it would be,\u201d said songwriter Patrick Simmons in a now-lost interview with Goldmine Mag. \u201cThe way of life and vibe really connected with me and the roots of my music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJet\u201d by Paul McCartney and Wings from \u2018Band On The Run\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784037790_95_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/paul-mccartney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul McCartney<\/a> and Wings dropped \u201cJet\u201d in 1974, and it was a lightning-fast hit on the charts. The first single from their album Band On The Run, \u201cJet\u201d peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100 and UK Singles charts. It\u2019s a fine little glam rock tune that really set the vibe for the entire album.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHooked On A Feeling\u201d by Blue Swede from \u2018Hooked On A Feeling\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784037791_8_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There isn\u2019t a baby boomer alive who can hold back from singing along to those \u201cooga chaka\u201d chants. \u201cHooked On A Feeling\u201d by Blue Swede is actually a pop-rock cover of a 1968 song by B. J. Thomas, but Blue Swede really turned it into a hit on the charts. This memorable song peaked at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and Cash Box Top 100 charts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryday\u201d by Slade from \u2018Old New Borrowed And Blue\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784037791_687_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Slade had a glam rock smash hit on their hands with \u201cEveryday\u201d. This entry on our list of classic rock songs that every baby boomer alive still remembers from 1974 peaked at No. 3 on the UK Singles chart.
