Patti LaBelle left viewers divided after her unconventional rendition of the U.S. national anthem<\/a> at Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game.<\/p>\n

The 82-year-old soul singer<\/a> stepped up to the mound to perform the \u201cStar-Spangled Banner\u201d at the 96th Midsummer Classic in front of a packed crowd at Citizens Bank Park in her hometown of Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

However, LaBelle<\/a> appeared to miss some lyrics and take some creative liberties with parts of the song, which did not go down well with fans on social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cPatti LaBelle is one of our greatest singers, however why people think they have to add their own twist to the National Anthem boggles my mind. Leave it alone. It was not meant to be sung with runs or \u2018making it your own,\u2019\u201d one person on X argued after the performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow about that horrible rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by Patti LaBelle at the MLB ASG,\u201d added another.<\/p>\n

LaBelle\u2019s performance has drawn backlash from some MLB fans who criticized her for making the anthem her own (AP)<\/p>\n

\u201cMy poor ears. They exorcising demons out there in Philly,\u201d wrote a third.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry but the decision to have Patti LaBelle sing the National Anthem to open tonight\u2019s MLB All Star Game was embarrassing and insulting. Her rendition was terrible,\u201d a fourth raged.<\/p>\n

Others leapt to LaBelle\u2019s defence, with one person writing: \u201cOmg all these horrible replies! The woman is 82!! Let\u2019s hear you at 82!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cY\u2019all she\u2019s in her \u201880s sounding and looking better than anybody,\u201d another echoed.<\/p>\n

LaBelle, 82, has been referred to as the \u2018Godmother of Soul\u2019 (AP)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time LaBelle has struggled in front of a live audience.<\/p>\n

During the 2023 BET Awards, LaBelle took to the stage to pay tribute to \u201cQueen of Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll\u201d Tina Turner \u2014 who had died earlier that year \u2014 performing her 1989 hit, \u201c(Simply) the Best.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, she then forgot the words mid-performance, humming the tune before telling the crowd, \u201cWhatever, I can\u2019t see the words… I\u2019m trying, y\u2019all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, LaBelle powered through to the end of her performance with the crowd singing along, concluding by saying, \u201cGod bless you, Tina Turner, BET, hip-hop!\u201d<\/p>\n

A BET spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter of the snafu at the time: \u201cIt was an extraordinary privilege to celebrate the life and legacy of Ms. Tina Turner at BET Awards 2023. Having the incomparable Ms. Patti LaBelle on our stage honoring one of her contemporaries was an equal privilege. Due to the crowd\u2019s enthusiasm, the teleprompter was obstructed, obscuring Ms. LaBelle\u2019s view of the lyrics.
