The Star Wars director, George Lucas<\/a>, has added his voice to the growing chorus of film-makers receptive to the rising use of AI tools in moviemaking.<\/p>\n

Speaking in an interview with A Rabbit\u2019s Foot<\/a>, Lucas, 82, said: \u201cArtificial intelligence means it\u2019s much easier for us to make movies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Resistance to the technology, he said, was \u201cvery much like sitting here saying: \u2018Well, I believe the horse and the buggy is really where it\u2019s at. These cars, they break down, they need gas, there\u2019s all kinds of problems with them and pretty soon they\u2019ll be making them into tanks, and then they\u2019ll be killing people. It\u2019s terrible.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Adoption of such tools, continued Lucas, was an inevitability. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing you can do about it. That\u2019s progress, it\u2019s the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucas is not the only director of a Star Wars film to have come out in favour of AI. The British film-maker Gareth Edwards<\/a>, who made Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and most recently Jurassic World Rebirth said generative AI \u201cis a fucking genius at helping you\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, there are high-profile holdouts, including the director of The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan, who recently said<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019ve never seen a technology that\u2019s been so successfully adopted by Wall Street and by investors \u2026 that the public has so thoroughly rejected. Young people, in particular, they coined this term \u2018AI slop\u2019 \u2026 There\u2019s a sort of disdain for things AI.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Steven Soderbergh, whose documentary John Lennon: The Last Interview<\/a> includes AI-generated sequences, has expressed ambivalence. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s the solution to everything, and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s the death of everything. We are in the very early stages. Five years from now, we all may be going: \u2018That was a fun phase.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucas also told the website his thoughts on the industry\u2019s use of audience testing and focus groups. \u201cI don\u2019t like focus groups,\u201d he said. \u201cThe audience doesn\u2019t know what they want to see. If they don\u2019t like a character, that\u2019s interesting, and as a film-maker I want to find out why. But when the studios hear that, they take the wrong message. They let the audience actually make the movie \u2026 Now, it\u2019s all about what the fans think.
