They may have suffered their third loss in four matches, but Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has declared he is \u201cproud\u201d of the way his side refused to panic in a high-quality contest against the Broncos.<\/p>\n

After splitting possession evenly with the Broncos in the opening half, the home side spent much of the second 40 minutes on the back foot, managing just 37 per cent of the ball as they were forced to repeatedly defend their own line.<\/p>\n

Despite the relentless pressure, the Panthers stayed composed and remained in the contest until the final minutes, which saw Reece Walsh produce an amazing cut-out pass to send Josiah Karapani over the line for the match-winning try.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was actually proud that we didn\u2019t panic and just hung in there and tried to wait for our turn,\u201d Cleary said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven the last play down there in the corner with two minutes to go, we should have got it, but it\u2019s just one of those nights.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt really good about our chances. Scored a couple of good ones in the first half when we were down there but (it) just wasn\u2019t to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Continuing to speak about the performance, Cleary admitted that he couldn\u2019t remember the last time his side had been subjected to such sustained pressure from another team.<\/p>\n

For more than half a decade, the Panthers coach has been accustomed to seeing his side control territory and force opponents into long periods of defensive pressure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t remember a game like it, to be honest. (We) sort of came here knowing it was going to be a high-quality game and that\u2019s pretty much how it turned out,\u201d Cleary continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, I can\u2019t remember a game where we felt we ran out of time and that\u2019s kind of how I feel.<\/p>\n

\u201cCredit to the Broncos, they controlled the ball well and kicked well. Reece Walsh was unbelievable tonight and came up with a try that I don\u2019t know if many people could stop that one.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought our defence was outstanding. <\/p>\n

\u201cI thought there was lot of things about our game tonight was good, but ultimately there were a lot of things that we could definitely have done better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Cleary hinted that the club could have more contract extensions to announce in the coming weeks after securing the services of dummy-half Mitch Kenny until the end of 2031.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said earlier in the year that I\u2019m really confident that things will work themselves out and I look forward to a few more over the next few weeks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
