When I got back to DC and watched the tape, the weight of the moment was visible \u2014 a couple of seconds of dead air while I sat with what she\u2019d said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge5000l356rz4jvmwsw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s what the camera couldn\u2019t pick up. For months before I booked a flight, I\u2019d been buried in economic data, chasing a theory I\u2019d never said out loud: that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/13\/economy\/inflation-prices\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the cost-of-living crisis<\/a> wasn\u2019t just making life expensive. It was eviscerating the deal we\u2019d all signed onto and believed. Go to school, get a job, work hard and do the right things. She gave up her apartment and went $15,000 into debt to go back to nursing school, betting on herself and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/14\/economy\/healthcare-jobs-labor-market\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the shortage in healthcare<\/a>. The tradeoff: her sister\u2019s basement, because there were no other options. Her new roommates are five and three.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000n356rl1mjnahn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As we drove past her old apartment complex, she walked me through the math that forced her to leave. Her rent had gone from $785 to nearly $1,600 \u2014 for the same unit \u2013 over the course of seven years. Her income hadn\u2019t moved.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000o356r1nh6xjem@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ve already paid a quarter million dollars in rent in my life,\u201d she said. \u201cI should already have the home with the equity paid off.\u201d Then her voice trailed off. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t make the right decisions.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000p356rj2pox7cr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jolene and I are the same age, same graduating class, same state, just opposite corners \u2013 her side of Cleveland, my side of Toledo. For a while our lives ran parallel. Then they split, and I can\u2019t tell you where or why. She did all the things we were told to do, and she\u2019s living in her sister\u2019s basement. In the weeks after, the only answer I could come up with was an old proverb: There but for the grace of God go I.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000r356rp9t2zga5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/12\/politics\/cost-of-living-us-financial-problem-vis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cAffordability\u201d<\/a> is everywhere now \u2014 a clipboard word that flattens Jolene into a data point shorthanded for poll-tested talking points. A word that detaches itself from the actual people experiencing the long-fraying fabric that underpins the economic promise of America tear straight through.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000s356r51qz33u2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/29\/business\/stock-market-economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The stock market sets new records<\/a> on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. Corporate earnings, productivity growth and consumer spending are all consistently robust. Those who do well are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/26\/business\/economy-retail-airlines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unquestionably doing even better<\/a> right now, and, if you look deeper into the numbers, driving more and more of the broader economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000t356rjakturn6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those with more modest means are falling further behind and, perhaps most alarmingly, finding fewer pathways to the economic mobility that has helped define the American dream.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000u356roezrqiyi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ripple effect of that dynamic is now a defining feature of the country \u2013 economically, societally, politically.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000v356rga2e524r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So I went looking for what sits underneath those topline economic numbers. Few households are undone by one ER visit or one flat tire. What breaks you is the accelerating climb of the big costs \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/01\/business\/seattle-social-housing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">housing<\/a>, childcare, the vanishing retirement floor \u2014 until a household sits so close to the edge that the flat tire nudges them off the cliff.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000w356r7fmbyewq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This project isn\u2019t a ledger. It doesn\u2019t try to catalog every line-item pressing on every American household.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000x356rpm7gxh36@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, I set out to trace the structural weaknesses that form the increasingly brittle architecture from which thousands of individual hardships descend. One household\u2019s squeeze may look nothing like its neighbor\u2019s, but trace each far enough back and the same few fractures are doing the work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6000y356ririmxabj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cleveland: the \u201cmost affordable\u201d big city in the Midwest, where home prices have surged more than anywhere in the country. Boston: childcare, the expense that ripples through everything. Atlanta: glittering on the top line while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/14\/business\/live-news\/cpi-inflation-kevin-warsh-capitol-hill-testimony\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">real inflation for people just getting by<\/a> runs closer to 8 percent. Tampa: where the retirement bargain comes apart.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge60010356r40g9um7k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People let a stranger with a camera into the rawest corners of their lives and told the truth about the most sensitive subject in American life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge60011356r0iz74xsz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a suburb outside Boston, I met Greg and Audrey Dunn, two working parents making $150,000, with three kids under four and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/21\/politics\/child-care-affordability-midterms-pennsylvania\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a childcare bill<\/a> six to seven times their mortgage. They\u2019ve borrowed against the house and sold a property to cover their childcare bills. They insisted my crew sit for family dinner first \u2014 the soft anarchy familiar to a father of four. Late that night they laid their printed bills across the kitchen island and walked me through them, line by line. \u201cIt has to work,\u201d Audrey told me.\n    <\/p>\n<p>    We want to hear from you<\/p>\n<p>      What do you think gets missed when we talk about affordability? In her eyes it was the opposite: the clearest picture of everything her immigrant family was never offered. The home she grew up in, that her family could have bought for $100,000 a decade ago, is worth seven times that now. Her father works construction; her mother cleans houses. Her fixed Social Security check doesn\u2019t move; her rent climbed from $850 to $1,250 over the course of a decade. As we sat across the kitchen table in her one-bedroom Tampa apartment, she walked me through the arithmetic of a single flat tire \u2014 without $80, she drove on the doughnut spare until she could scrape together the money for a real replacement. What you do when your income\u2019s frozen and everything else isn\u2019t? \u201cYou pray, for real. Or you get another job \u2014 and a lot of times they don\u2019t wanna hire old people like me.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge60014356rhca9bl6v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The one bill Phebie never misses is her car insurance. Confused, I asked her to explain. She has to keep it paid, she said, in case she has to sleep in the car.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge60015356r4fn3oiw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That answer left me visibly taken aback on camera \u2014 and still unprepared for Elen Trosino. She arrived at a free clinic in full scrubs; I assumed she was a volunteer. She\u2019d come straight from her nursing job, and she was a patient. She\u2019d beaten cancer the year before, but it had obliterated her finances. \u201cThe person I live with wanted me to move out, so I did. Problem is where will I go? I sleep in my car.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge60016356row5jwdx0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWait, really? Right now?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge60017356rkjfaubrb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLike a week now. Finding a room is easy, but what about the down payment? The security deposit? I just started working this year. Last year was a battle. So, I don\u2019t know.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge60019356rd70xyvk5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Set Phebie and Elen side by side and they share almost nothing \u2014 different races, ages, professions and politics. What they share is the foundation. What they share is what underpins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/08\/economy\/ny-fed-inflation-expectations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the frustration, anxiety and fear<\/a> consuming so many households that cuts across race, gender, generation, geography and a widening swath of income levels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6001a356rrhwo9np1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Their stories are the story.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6001b356r8gv5li52@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To sit on camera with a stranger and walk line by line through your finances \u2014 to share fear and feelings of failure with such candor is an extraordinary act of trust. Each and every one of them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6001d356rqro8y0fn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI feel like it\u2019ll pay off in the end, and I\u2019ll pay off my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/01\/business\/trump-student-loans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">school debt<\/a> and stay here as long as I can and as long they\u2019ll keep me,\u201d Jolene told me as we sat in her sister\u2019s basement, now doubling as her apartment, every inch covered by still-packed boxes. \u201cThen buy a home and one day be able to retire, and we can actually enjoy everything I\u2019ve worked for.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrl44ge6001f356rkzcbtmf2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the weeks since my travels, there\u2019s been what I can only describe as an auto-play loop of moments from those conversations running through my brain. During my commute to and from work. Lying in bed at night.
