Not if you tune into the Hit Network\u2019s Carrie &amp; Tommy.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Da2XWQHPZiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">candid on-air chat<\/a>, co-hosts Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little discussed if talking to children as young as eight about menstrual cycles would be too much, too soon.<\/p>\n<p>The radio duo argued that eight was not too young for parents to open the lines of communication with their children, whether girls or boys, because kids need to know about their bodies from a young age. However, it seems not everyone feels that way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone else has called up and said that not everyone discusses this with their kids as if it\u2019s not actually something we should be discussing,\u201d Bickmore said on air. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find that really interesting. I can see why you wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A caller with opposing views was then put through to the duo to explain why they thought talking about menstrual cycles on the airwaves was not ideal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt eight years old, do you think that they should be discussing that?\u201d the caller asked Bickmore and Little, with the caller saying her kids \u201clearn about their bodies\u201d but not periods until they reach \u201cbetween 10 and 12\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said that you discuss everything with your kids,\u201d she quizzed Bickmore. \u201cYou could discuss threesomes with your kids, doesn\u2019t mean everybody has to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Little didn\u2019t see what the big deal was as having periods was a \u201cbodily function like peeing or weeing\u201d, and he found the caller\u2019s threesome comment amusing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA period is not a sexual thing,\u201d he laughed. \u201cYou linking it to a threesomes is the most wild stuff I\u2019ve heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/2b7e4ad8285eb05e916a1964d0cf07bf\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Carrie Bickmore named Victorian of the Year\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>When the caller was asked by the duo what made her so uncomfortable with the topic, she said it was her prerogative when she wanted to start that conversation with her children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you want me to discuss that? On a pick-up from school, on the way home?\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll discuss everything with them, but not through a radio station. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s your choice to announce it to other people\u2019s children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the tense exchange, another caller was put through who had the period talk with her daughter at 8, when she got her period. <\/p>\n<p>The caller also revealed she got her period at that age and it was a terrifying experience as she \u201cdidn\u2019t know anything\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>When she added that she was raised by a single father who didn\u2019t discuss the topic with her beforehand, Little appeared visibly emotional as he held back tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was extremely scared,\u201d the caller said as Little teared up. \u201cMy dad was a single father \u2013 he didn\u2019t even know what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bickmore argued that talking about menstrual cycles should be an open discussion at any age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it interesting the idea that there should be any shame around it the same way you teach your kids all the different bodily functions,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause I think there\u2019s a difference between talking about menstrual cycles in a sexual way and talking about it as a reproductive part of your body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This discourse has since opened up a debate on the show\u2019s official Instagram account, with the majority of followers praising Bickmore and Little for being vulnerable and openly tackling this important issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLove that you are talking about this. It\u2019s totally normal!!!! Education is key!\u201d one commented on the video posted to the platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalk about periods! Boys and girls both need to know,\u201d another echoed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow ridiculous!!! Needs to be discussed by everyone!!! Education people!!\u201d one commented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy make it a secret \u2026 it\u2019s not the olden days don\u2019t make it taboo!\u201d yet another wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should never be a shameful topic,\u201d agreed one follower. <\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Is talking about periods on live radio TMI?
