Deutsche Bank global liveability data revealed

A new report gives an eye-opening comparison between Australia and the rest of the world when it comes to the rising costs of real estate.

When the amount of disposable income a household with two earners in a rented three-bedroom apartment is compared, Switzerland’s Zurich comes in as the shock winner of the place most affordable place to live in the world followed by Geneva, San Francisco, Luxembourg and Boston.

The least affordable capital city by these metrics is Manila in the Philippines.

Melbourne made it to ninth most affordable – up three spots from last year – with Sydney lagging far behind in 29th spot.

The current cost of living crunch being felt by Australians is highlighted by comparing the data to a decade ago when Melbourne was riding high in third spot for disposable income after rent and Sydney far higher up the leaderboard in 14th place.

The report also looked at the cost to purchase an apartment in the city centre on a per square metre basis.

Hong Kong was by far the most expensive place at almost $40,000 per square metre followed by Zurich and Seoul with London in seventh spot and New York in eighth.

Sydney came in as the 16th most expensive place to buy at about $18,500 per square metre.

Melbourne is the 40th most expensive city in the world at a little over $10,000 per square metre.

Compared to data from 2016, apartments in both Melbourne and Sydney are up about 30 per cent.

When it comes to renting a three-bedroom apartment in the heart of the city, the most expensive place to live in is New York City by at almost $3000 a week.

The stomach churning cost puts the Sydney property crunch in perspective.

Sydney ranks as ninth most expensive place at around $1660 weekly and Melbourne is in 23rd spot at about $1160.

Renting a comparable apartment a decade ago cost about 50 per cent less in Melbourne and 40 per cent less in Sydney.

The fresh data comes from Deutsche Bank’s annual cost of living index, whose authors Jim Reid and Galina Pozdnyakova ranked 69 global cities using measures including the cost of renting and buying comparable properties in different cities and juxtaposing them with wages earned by the people living there.

You can read the full report <a class="body-link"
