Meanwhile, a 2025 University of Exeter study found that Pvolve workouts are “effective at improving strength and balance in women during and post-menopause”.

This is impressive, but begs a few simple questions: what is Pvolve, how does it work, and is it actually different from other fitness offerings on the market?

Dani Coleman is Jennifer Aniston’s personal trainer and vice-president of training at Pvolve, which she describes as a “functional fitness method”.

“That means you’re going to move your body in ways you move in everyday life – forward, sideways and rotationally,” she explains. Imagine classic strength-building exercises such as squats, planks and press-ups, interspersed with more novel movements such as bends, twists, curtsies and balances, and performed as a controlled, flowing sequence.

“Pvolve incorporates all aspects of what the body needs for overall movement and longevity,” Coleman continues. “It is designed to improve bone, muscle and heart health, as well as strength, mobility and stability. But our bread and butter is low-impact functional training.”

Some Pvolve workouts require specialist equipment. Others, like the one below, shared especially by Coleman for Independent readers to try, simply require your body weight and a bit of space.

Jennifer Aniston’s workout

The video below contains a 22-minute follow-along workout led by Coleman, designed to recruit and strengthen muscles across the entire body.

The main benefit of a follow-along workout like this is access to Coleman’s regular form cues, helping you improve your technique and get the most out of each exercise.

This workout is low-impact with an emphasis on multi-directional movements. The session also focuses on activating the matrix of core muscles that wrap around your midsection – not just the rectus abdominis, responsible for the much-discussed six-pack shape.

“Deep core strength is so important because it protects your spine in your day-to-day life,” Coleman says. “It helps your lower body and upper body work in tandem, and it’s the power source of your body that keeps you upright and moving. A strong core will set you up for success in everything you do, movement-wise.”

What the science says about Pvolve

Researchers at the University of Exeter studied 72 healthy and active pre-, peri- and post-menopausal women between the ages of 40 and 60. They split them into two groups.

The first group was asked to continue their existing exercise routines. The second group was given a 12-week low-impact Pvolve resistance training programme comprising four weekly sessions, each lasting 30-35 minutes. The results in the latter group were noteworthy.

Researchers found that people who consistently followed the Pvolve programme saw a 19 per cent increase in hip function and lower body strength, a 21 per cent increase in full-body flexibility, a 10 per cent increase in dynamic balance, mobility and stability, and an increase in lean muscle without an increase in their total body mass.

“These improvements were comparable across pre-, peri-, and post-menopausal groups, suggesting for the first time that the menopause transition, and associated decline in sex hormone production, may not negatively affect the ability to see benefits from a resistance exercise training programme,” the University of Exeter reports.

Read more: I’m 46 and I tried Jennifer Aniston’s Pvolve workout – it felt like I was exercising for my future self

Jennifer Aniston uses the Pvolve training plan, which utilises specialist equipment such as the P3 trainer, pictured right (Pvolve/Jennifer Aniston)

Participant and GP Lorna Mason said she and others “started to notice we were changing shape” roughly nine weeks into the trial. She also enjoyed significant improvements in her hip strength and mobility.

Fellow participant April Brooks found she could easily touch her toes by the end of the 12 weeks, and this extra flexibility stayed with her even after the three-month test period had ended and she eased off the workouts.

“Women often see a decline in their muscle strength and balance shortly before, during and after the menopause,” says lead researcher Professor Francis Stephens. “This ultimately increases the risk of falls and fractures later in life, particularly of the hip, which is why it’s so important to find a way for women to maintain that strength and balance as they get older.

“The great thing about these simple resistance exercises is they can easily be performed at home, and we’ve now shown they’re effective at improving strength and balance in women during and post-menopause.”

Read more: Scientists followed women through midlife for 15 years – this activity was linked to longer, better lives

Jennifer Aniston with her trainer Dani Coleman (Pvolve/Dani Coleman)

How Jennifer Aniston uses Pvolve to push her strength and mobility

“With Jen, we use all three of our signature formats: strength and sculpt, sculpt and burn, and progressive weight training,” says Coleman.

This might read like gibberish to those unfamiliar with the method. It simply means some of Aniston’s workouts prioritise building strength, some focus on raising the heart rate and some place greater emphasis on other facets of fitness such as mobility, stability and balance.

The core muscles are particularly important to the actor for protecting against the resurgence of a serious prior back injury. Targeting them involves a lot of plank and stability work, Coleman says, praising the actor’s “unmatched” core strength.

The pair tend to train together in person twice per week, then Aniston follows one or more online Pvolve workouts elsewhere in the week. She also takes the equipment with her when travelling to do sessions on the go, committing to her training with “inspiring consistency”.

“I love the way she listens to her body and honours it,” Coleman adds. “There are days when she’ll say, ‘I have 45 minutes; let’s hit it,’ and other times when we do a shorter, slower-paced strength and sculpt workout, focusing more on mobility and stability to match her energy levels.

“Jen is the epitome of working smarter, not harder, and it’s been incredible to see her results because she just keeps getting better and better.”

Read more: A top kettlebell expert shares four workouts to get you in ‘the shape of your life’

My verdict

I had fun trying Pvolve workouts for myself, with the sessions striking a fine balance between leaving me challenged but not beaten up. This does not change the fact that I don’t believe any exercise brand has a magic formula for better fitness.

Pvolve’s use of expensive and exclusive equipment goes against my fitness ethos – the “total transformation bundle” costs upwards of £700, on top of a monthly membership to the platform. Trainers need to be fairly paid, but this is a significant financial deterrent.

Jennifer Aniston uses the Pvolve workout method to stay strong and mobile (Pvolve)

However, I’m impressed by how Pvolve has put the many requisite parts of a successful exercise plan – balance, strength training, multidirectional movement, jumping, some cardio, etc. – together in one polished package. The ties to Jennifer Aniston surely only add to this appeal.

This is to be applauded. Public bodies have tried for years to encourage people to exercise more, and it’s not an easy sell. By creating something people can enjoy and maintain, the brand has done excellent work. And if you want proof of the effectiveness of the workouts, the University of Exeter study’s results speak for themselves.

Read more: I did goblet squats every day for a month and the results surprised me

Jennifer Aniston calls Pvolve workouts “a game changer”, granting them her seal of approval by officially partnering with…

[37
64,63,538,137
post-806663","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fitness","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-fitness","tag-health
["GET
