{"id":806939,"date":"2026-07-17T22:05:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T22:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/806939\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T22:05:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T22:05:12","slug":"from-book-doof-to-bedazzling-social-reading-is-all-the-rage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/806939\/","title":{"rendered":"From Book Doof to bedazzling, social reading is all the rage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Grant Krupp was at a party when he picked up a book that was lying around with a &#8220;not safe for work&#8221; (NSFW) title.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was How to Live with a Huge Penis, which was published in 2009 and written by Richard Jacob and Owen Thomas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Suffice to say, it caused a bit of a stir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It also sparked an idea for Krupp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[I thought] wouldn&#8217;t it be great if I held a party, with all my friends, and absolutely nobody talked, and that was the whole experience?&#8221; Krupp says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Fast forward about 15 years, and Krupp was reading an article in the New York Times about reading experiences in New York City where people would bring their books to a bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And I thought, aha!,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Reading parties, that could be a thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That&#8217;s how Book Doof was born \u2014 social events where people turn up with a book and read, with carefully selected ambient music \u2014 and sometimes live DJs \u2014 playing in the background.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The first Book Doof was held in Melbourne in October 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A recent one attracted 300 people, but according to Krupp it may have been as many as 500, with the events routinely selling out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But what do these events look like practically?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So, when you enter a Book Doof, it&#8217;s generally quite quiet,&#8221; Krupp says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If it&#8217;s in a bar, it&#8217;s quite surreal to walk into a space and see people sitting and immersed in a book, rather than actually conversing or talking as they normally would.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man sitting down leaning his head on a pile of books, eyes closed, reading glasses\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/25654e2816a0c21592a27f1589cf102f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Grant Krupp says having reading as your favourite hobby can be an isolating experience, but Book Doof has broken that spell. (Supplied: Ella Clarke-King, Alex Weston and\u00a0Shari Defteros)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Krupp says he wants it to be OK to journal, paint or mark exam papers at a Book Doof in future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The majority of the people you&#8217;ll see will always be reading,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But I also want them to do other activities that don&#8217;t bother other people, but that you can get done and feel accountable for because other people are doing stuff in silence at the same time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Matters of the heart<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Krupp says people usually read for about 2 to 2.5 hours at a standard Book Doof before getting up and sitting with somebody they haven&#8217;t met before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That&#8217;s when they exchange names and book recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>Loading Instagram content<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While Krupp says Book Doof isn&#8217;t designed for people to pick up, organisers won&#8217;t stand in your way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I have heard of stories of people going on dates after my Book Doofs, and that really does warm my heart,&#8221; Krupp says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But at least for the moment, I don&#8217;t want to turn it into a dating scene because there are other types of events that are already doing that really well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The purpose, initially, of my events is helping people to get out of maybe their heads and \u2026 sort of relax and feel like they&#8217;re getting reading done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Or getting something done, or being social when they need to be social, if they&#8217;re feeling isolated, or alone, or they just need to find their people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Book Doof has expanded to Perth, and Krupp welcomes enquiries from around the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s definitely an appetite for it in other cities,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>Finding your tribe<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Scarlett Hopper is the owner of Sydney&#8217;s first romance bookstore called Romancing the Novel, which has been open since September 2024, and is expanding to Brisbane in mid-August.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Scarlett Hopper standing in a pink dress in front of a book shelf\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/26251787b8721ca968c1434e7ea63936.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Scarlett Hopper says there&#8217;s strong demand for book bedazzling. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Paddington bookstore has welcomed celebrities and collaborated with movie studios on events linked to adaptations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But one of the most popular events it holds involves decorating its titles \u2014 what it calls book bedazzling \u2014 with these get-togethers routinely selling out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;My number one thing in my DMs is please, more book bedazzling,&#8221; Hopper says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Book bedazzling involves decorating covers. (Supplied: Romancing the Novel)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Romance is having its moment like no other,&#8221; Hopper says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I wanted to create a really safe space with no judgement, specifically for women because I do think the world is created for men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And so, I wanted something where women could come in, feel really safe, find connection, [and] form community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Carrying around a book<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">By now you&#8217;d be familiar with the Hot Dudes Reading Instagram account which, as the handle suggests, features attractive men reading in public, complete with witty captions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Hot Dudes Reading started as a viral Instagram account. (Supplied: Hot Dudes Reading)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The creators of the account, who&#8217;ve also published a book by the same name, prefer to remain anonymous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But they say that while their intent wasn&#8217;t to solve a literacy crisis, they&#8217;re fine with being the reason men choose to carry around a book.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A guy is so much hotter with a book in his hand than he is staring down at his phone,&#8221; they say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Plus, every guy in our feed is proof that reading doesn&#8217;t cost you anything socially; in fact, it might actually be what closes the deal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading Instagram content<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A recent study by Creative Australia has found word of mouth is the most common way Australians are discovering new books \u2014 and it&#8217;s no different in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Book identification is a big part of our comment section,&#8221; say the creators behind Hot Dudes Reading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People will zoom in on the font, or they&#8217;ll recognise the cover from their book club and call it out in the comments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We love it when people appreciate the funny captions, but it&#8217;s also great when you see strangers help each other ID a book so they can add it to their TBR piles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All about community<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mischa Parkee is a manager and co-owner of The Rose Read bookshop in Summer Hill in Sydney&#8217;s inner west.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mischa Parkee standing in front of a bookshelf, smiling, reading glasses, suit jacket\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/95cc606f39f5806c31d77e7a67f694c8.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mischa Parkee says even though reading is solitary, you&#8217;re still connecting with characters another human has created.
