{"id":807838,"date":"2026-07-18T08:11:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T08:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/807838\/"},"modified":"2026-07-18T08:11:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-18T08:11:12","slug":"white-house-defends-argentina-falkland-islands-banner-after-world-cup-win-over-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/807838\/","title":{"rendered":"White House defends Argentina Falkland Islands banner after World Cup win over England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The White House has defended Argentina\u2019s decision to display a controversial political banner following their semi-final win over England.<\/p>\n<p>Lionel Messi inspired the defending champions to a 2-1 victory in Atlanta on Thursday (AEST) to set up a final against Spain on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>During the players\u2019 celebrations on the pitch, they unveiled a sheet which read: \u201cLas Malvinas son Argentinas,\u201d which translates to \u201cThe Falklands are Argentine\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Falkland Islands are a British overseas territory in the southwest Atlantic Ocean that has been the subject of a long-running dispute between the UK and Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>The islands were the subject of a war between the two nations in 1982 and led to the deaths of 255 British military personnel, three islanders and 649 Argentine soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>Argentina could face disciplinary action for unfurling the banner as it may contravene FIFA\u2019s rules regarding political statements.<\/p>\n<p>But the White House has come out in support of the message, saying Argentina has the opportunity and ability to \u201cmake those statements\u201d in the US.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House FIFA task force, referenced the US constitution\u2019s free speech rights, saying: \u201cWe believe in our First Amendment rights here in the United States of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the UK government has supported FIFA\u2019s decision to investigate the matter.<\/p>\n<p>A UK spokesperson said: \u201cThe World Cup might not be ours, but the Falkland Islands definitely are. Our commitment to the Falklands will never waver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They went on to add: \u201cWe do not wish to see politics being brought into sport.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/793f4bfe64df8ada6f5edbf13c000821\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Argentina Fans Celebrate Team's Victory Over England\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNor do we wish the Islands and their people to be used as a political football in every conversation about England and Argentina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Argentina vice-president Victoria Villarruel took to social media to claim the victory over England \u201cwasn\u2019t just another match\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also shared a video of what appeared to be Argentine soldiers, along with the message: \u201cThe Falklands are Argentine.
