Duval/Zagreb Tourist Board)

ZAGREB, 18 July (Hina/Croatia Week) – Croatian households’ financial assets reached €120 billion at the end of the first quarter of 2026, up €9.6 billion or 8.8% year on year and 0.8% from the previous quarter, the Croatian National Bank (HNB) said on Friday.

Households’ financial liabilities rose to €32bn, up 2.6% from the previous quarter and €3.5bn, or 12.2%, year on year, the HNB said.

As a result, the sector’s net financial worth increased to €87.5bn, up 0.1% quarter on quarter and €6.2bn, or 7.6%, from a year earlier.

The central bank also said the Croatian economy’s total financial assets stood at €517bn at the end of the first quarter, up €5.5bn from the previous quarter and €34.5bn year on year, while financial liabilities totalled €546bn, increasing by €7.7bn and €34.1bn respectively.

Relative to GDP, the economy’s financial assets amounted to 547% of annual GDP and financial liabilities to 577%, down 8.2 and 11.3 percentage points respectively from a year earlier.

Non-financial corporations held €151bn in financial assets at the end of the quarter, up 0.5% from the previous quarter, while their financial liabilities increased by 1.2% to €234bn. Their net financial worth declined by €1.9bn from the end of the previous quarter to €83.2bn.

Whilst the headline figure is impressive, Croatian households now hold €120 billion in financial assets, and their net financial wealth is growing, the numbers also tell a more complicated story.

Debt is rising alongside wealth, and liabilities are increasing at a faster annual rate than household assets. That does not mean Croatian households are becoming poorer, far from it, but it does show that the country’s financial progress is not simply a story of savings and prosperity.

Croatia’s economy is growing financially, but the balance sheet remains heavily leveraged. For ordinary households, the real question is not just how much wealth exists on paper, but how evenly that wealth is distributed and how much financial security people actually feel in their daily lives.

The figures point to a country that is becoming wealthier, but also one where the relationship between prosperity, borrowing and financial security is becoming increasingly important.

Sign up to receive the Croatia Week Newsletter

by croatiaweek July 18, 2026 in News Zagreb (Photo: J.
