{"id":80824,"date":"2025-08-19T21:01:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T21:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/80824\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T21:01:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T21:01:09","slug":"mets-place-catcher-francisco-alvarez-on-il-with-thumb-sprain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/80824\/","title":{"rendered":"Mets place catcher Francisco Alvarez on IL with thumb sprain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/nym\/new-york-mets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Mets<\/a> placed catcher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41253\/francisco-alvarez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Francisco Alvarez<\/a> on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right thumb UCL sprain.<\/p>\n<p>The move was retroactive to Monday and deprives the Mets of a power bat as they seek to solidify their playoff position.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez was hurt sliding into second base during Sunday night&#8217;s victory over Seattle in the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He did not travel with the team for Tuesday&#8217;s series opener at Washington, instead returning to New York to be evaluated.<\/p>\n<p>The Mets said Alvarez would be re-evaluated in 10 to 14 days for a potential return.<\/p>\n<p>Since his return from a monthlong stint in the minors, Alvarez is batting .323 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 21 games.<\/p>\n<p>The Mets recalled catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4009410\/hayden-senger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hayden Senger<\/a> from Triple-A Syracuse. New York also released right-hander <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32776\/paul-blackburn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Blackburn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The big-spending Mets have struggled in August to fall 5\u00bd games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East entering Tuesday.
