Sir Garry Sobers could dominate a match with the bat, ball or in the field, leaving a legacy that stretches far beyond his remarkable numbers, writes Lukhanyo Gqokoma.<\/p>\n
Sobers entered Test cricket as a 17-year-old spinner against England in 1954, batting at No 9 on debut.<\/p>\n
Four years later, he produced one of the defining innings in cricket history. His maiden Test century became an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan at Sabina Park.<\/p>\n
At 21 years and 216 days, Sobers became the youngest triple-centurion in Test cricket, a record he still holds. The innings also set a new world record and remained the highest Test score for 36 years before Brian Lara struck 375 against England in 1994.<\/p>\n
Sobers went on to score 8,032 runs in 93 Tests at an average of 57.78, including 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. Eleven of those centuries went beyond 150, highlighting his ability to turn starts into match-defining scores.<\/p>\n

That rare versatility helped him claim 235 Test wickets at an average of 34.03, including six five-wicket hauls.<\/p>\n He was also an outstanding fielder, completing 109 catches during his international career.<\/p>\n Another piece of history arrived in 1968 when Sobers became the first batter to hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket. Playing for Nottinghamshire, he dispatched six consecutive deliveries from Glamorgan bowler Malcolm Nash beyond the boundary.<\/p>\n His impact continued long after his playing career ended. Sobers was knighted for his services to cricket in 1975 and named a National Hero of Barbados in 1998.<\/p>\n ALSO: Flower rules out England coaching role<\/a><\/p>\n He was also selected as one of Wisden\u2019s five Cricketers of the 20th Century, while the ICC\u2019s annual Men\u2019s Cricketer of the Year award carries his name.<\/p>\n Sobers could bat with elegance and power, bowl left-arm pace, orthodox spin and wrist spin, and change matches in the field. Every discipline offered him another way to leave his mark.<\/p>\n His greatness came from far more than one innings or record.
