The National party\u2019s Senate leader, Bridget McKenzie<\/a>, has used an appearance at a conference of the populist right in London to declare that conservatives are \u201cin a war\u201d against mass immigration, \u201cleftwing globalists\u201d and \u201cwoke\u201d institutions, and to urge rightwing movements across the English-speaking world to unite and fight back.<\/p>\n

McKenzie was speaking at the inaugural CPAC GB in London, a British spinoff of the influential US Conservative Political Action Conference<\/a>, organised by the former British prime minister Liz Truss. She gave a speech on Saturday morning before appearing on a panel chaired by Truss, alongside other rightwing figures.<\/p>\n

The One Nation leader, Pauline Hanson, also attended the event<\/a>, part of a British tour that has drawn sustained criticism at home.<\/p>\n

McKenzie\u2019s speech focused on Australia\u2019s immigration program, saying Labor would oversee 2 million additional arrivals between 2022-23 and 2027-28 and arguing the country should be more selective about who was allowed to settle there.<\/p>\n

The federal Labor government has left Australia\u2019s permanent migration level steady at 185,000 arrivals this year. Net overseas migration fell to 306,000 people in 2024\u201325, down from 429,000 a year earlier, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you love your country and respect your past and want to build a future for your children, I believe you shouldn\u2019t be apologising for discriminating about who can come and live in your country, not on race, but on values,\u201d McKenzie said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you believe sharia laws are superior to the laws that my great country inherited from yours, then I\u2019m afraid Australia is not the place for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

She framed many of the issues facing Australia and Britain as part of a broader ideological struggle, claiming there was a global effort \u201cto undermine the very best of our British heritage by leftwing globalists\u201d, whom she described as well-funded, disciplined and relentless.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to professionalise, because our opponent is real, dangerous and wants to destroy us. And our own compassion, kindness, tolerance \u2013 all those great Christian values \u2013 are literally allowing them to do it to us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not mistake. We are in a war and we have to stand together and fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a rallying call to the audience, she said: \u201cWe need to be brave in our public conversations \u2026 The people need leaders who are brave enough to face the enemy, strong enough to fight them, and in the end, we will defeat them.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also claimed Australians were not being consulted on key issues, including transgender rights and net-zero energy policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody asked Australians if they agreed that a man could be a woman; asked them whether it was OK for men to compete in women\u2019s sports, to be housed in women\u2019s prisons. All these decisions were made without the people\u2019s permission.\u201d<\/p>\n

She later said: \u201cNobody asked Australians when we signed up to the fantasy of net zero if they also supported trashing private property rights as we rolled out renewable projects across our beautiful farmland.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the panel, McKenzie argued that Australia had become \u201cthe most woke\u201d country in the Anglosphere and claimed successive governments had undermined national sovereignty through high levels of immigration, net-zero policies and decisions taken by unelected bodies rather than elected politicians.<\/p>\n

Hanson had also used her platform at the conference to attack trans rights in Australia, a stance criticised by Liberal senator Andrew Bragg on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn public life, you should try and use whatever power you have to make life easier for people, not harder,\u201d Bragg told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn terms of the trans community, it\u2019s a small community, and I just don\u2019t accept the view that Pauline Hanson<\/a> expresses, that it\u2019s some great risk to Australia \u2026 the idea that there\u2019s a spectre of transgender people taking over Australia, I just think is insane.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hanson has been criticised at home<\/a> for divisive comments about migration levels and multiculturalism while in London.<\/p>\n

Labor frontbencher Andrew Charlton said the One Nation<\/a> leader was not addressing the most pressing issues facing Australia today.<\/p>\n

\u201cAustralia is a multicultural country,\u201d he told Sky News on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cWaves of migrants have added a huge amount to our country, and I just think it\u2019s incredibly divisive to be saying that some groups should be here and suggest that other groups shouldn\u2019t be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The deputy Liberal leader, Jane Hume, said she condemned the One Nation leader\u2019s comments and her appearance with the far-right activist Tommy Robinson.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that they were unnecessary,\u201d Hume told Sky. \u201cThey were divisive. They were inflammatory, and they were totally un-Australian,\u201d Hume said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not the way we operate in Australia. We have had a proud history of multiculturalism.
