Barnaby Joyce says Pauline Hanson<\/a> does not support the White Australia policy but he has backed her support for \u201cmass deportations\u201d of those overstaying their visas.<\/p>\n

Hanson and her colleagues have spent days clarifying, explaining or walking back headline-grabbing parts of the One Nation leader\u2019s trip to Europe<\/a>, including a podcast interview with the far-right convicted criminal Tommy Robinson, her attendance at a Dolce & Gabbana fashion show and downtime by a hotel pool in Italy with the mining billionaire Gina Rinehart.<\/p>\n

Channel Seven\u2019s Spotlight program on Sunday showed Hanson meeting Rupert Lowe, the leader of the hard-right party Restore Britain. Lowe gave her a party pamphlet titled \u201cmass deportations\u201d and Hanson replied they were \u201con the same page\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Seven reporter Liam Bartlett asked Hanson whether she thought \u201cthis concept of mass deportation is a good one?\u201d<\/p>\n

She replied: \u201cI love it.\u201d One Nation\u2019s website says the party wants to \u201cdeport 75,000 illegal migrants\u201d.<\/p>\n

Joyce didn\u2019t back down from those comments on Monday. Though he did not repeat the term \u201cmass deportations\u201d, he told Sunrise: \u201cAs it becomes apparent that they\u2019re not supposed to be here, they\u2019ll be put on a plane and sent back to where they\u2019re supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked how One Nation would enforce such a policy, Joyce said: \u201cWe\u2019ve got to make sure as people present themselves for medical issues or other things, they\u2019re removed from the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joyce and Hanson\u2019s daughter, Lee, on Monday again claimed their party leader had been taken out of context when, during the Robinson podcast, she blamed the end of the White Australia policy<\/a> for creating what she sees as problems with migration.<\/p>\n

Asked by Robinson about \u201cthe changing face of Australia due to Islamic immigration\u201d, Hanson replied: \u201cThey opened up and got rid of the White Australian policy then they started bringing in the different migrants.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hanson published two social media videos at the weekend responding to media attention to her trip, criticising \u201cleft wing media and their false, click bait stories\u201d over her White Australia policy comments.<\/p>\n

On Sunday evening, Lee Hanson \u2013 who works for the One Nation senator Sean Bell<\/a> \u2013 defended her mother, claiming she had been \u201cmisinterpreted\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder no way, shape, or form did she say she wished the White Australia policy hadn\u2019t have been changed,\u201d she said. \u201cShe does not support it and she does not want it back. So I do believe it\u2019s been taken out of context.\u201d<\/p>\n

She conceded that her mother \u201cmay not be the most eloquent person in the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

Joyce, on Channel Seven\u2019s Sunrise program, offered a similar defence. While he said One Nation \u201cdon\u2019t support the White Australia policy\u201d, Joyce claimed there had been a \u201cchain of events\u201d from its abolition which had led to bad outcomes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a statement of fact, and Pauline herself said that at the start, it started from [Harold] Holt, actually the wind-down of the White Australia policy, a very good thing,\u201d Joyce said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd at the start there was really no issues with it. But over time we got a section of people who didn\u2019t want to really assimilate with Australia, didn\u2019t work within the guardrails of Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Labor minister Tanya Plibersek said on Sunrise that Hanson \u201cwill say anything and then when it is challenged, she wants to stick her head in the sand and pretend she never said it\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s palling around with convicted criminals, she\u2019s trashing Australia overseas, then she\u2019s saying she\u2019s all for White Australia and for mass deportations and today apparently she\u2019s not,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

During the Spotlight program, Hanson said: \u201cI\u2019m not going to apologise for meeting with Tommy Robinson<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

But in a Sky News interview on Monday, Joyce said Seven had pushed for the Robinson podcast to happen, repeating a claim made by Hanson\u2019s chief of staff James Ashby<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n

Seven has been contacted for comment.<\/p>\n

However, one Seven source pushed back on One Nation\u2019s claims, saying the podcast was organised by Hanson\u2019s party.<\/p>\n

In a Facebook post on Monday afternoon, Hanson published what she claimed was the \u201cpitch\u201d her office had received from Spotlight when proposing the program, asked her followers: \u201cTell me if last nights [sic] show reflects their pitch?\u201d<\/p>\n

The purported pitch proposes a special on Australia\u2019s immigration numbers, which the document refers to as \u201cuncontrolled immigration\u201d, including suggestions that the Reform UK leader, Nigel Farage, invite Hanson to England to discuss immigration in Europe.<\/p>\n
