After Snetterton produced three different Superbike winners, round five at Brands Hatch distilled the championship contest into another direct confrontation between reigning champion Kyle Ryde and 2019 title winner Scott Redding.<\/p>\n
Ryde arrived at the Kent circuit with a 17-point championship advantage and left 19 points clear after winning the opening two races and finishing second in the finale. Redding countered with two runner-up finishes before denying his rival a clean sweep in Race Three, while Max Cook underlined his growing threat with three third places across the weekend.<\/p>\n
The 3.916-kilometre Grand Prix circuit also hosted Brands Hatch\u2019s centenary celebrations, although the pace was anything but historic. Ryde broke the outright circuit record in qualifying and then lowered the race lap record during Sunday\u2019s opening encounter.<\/p>\n
There was plenty to follow from an Australian perspective. Josh Brookes, Jason O\u2019Halloran and Brayden Elliott continued their Superbike campaigns, Oli Bayliss and Ben Currie filled the front row in Supersport qualifying, Cam Swain fought at the head of the Supersport Cup, Billy McConnell featured in both Supersport and Superstock, Jack Mahaffy contested Supersport, and Brodie Gawith lined up in British Sportbike.<\/p>\n
The Brands Hatch weekend followed a dramatic fourth round at Snetterton, where Bradley Ray, Redding and Ryde had shared the Superbike victories and Bayliss claimed his second British Supersport win. Our complete Snetterton BSB coverage can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n ZYN Superbike Race One<\/p>\n Kyle Ryde made his intentions clear in qualifying with a sensational 1m23.954s lap of the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit. The reigning champion went 0.209s beneath the previous outright benchmark to claim pole, with Scott Redding 0.417s behind and Max Cook completing the front row on the AJN Steelstock bimota.<\/p>\n Christian Iddon jumped to fourth late in the session, heading Bradley Ray and Leon Haslam on the second row. Glenn Irwin qualified seventh on his return from the heavy Snetterton crash, while Rory Skinner, Joe Talbot and Storm Stacey completed a top ten covered by little more than a second.<\/p>\n Jason O\u2019Halloran progressed from Q1 and secured 15th on the grid. Josh Brookes missed the transfer into Q2 by only 0.017s to his fellow Australian and started 16th, while Brayden Elliott qualified 23rd.<\/p>\n Superbike Race One<\/p>\n Ryde converted pole into the holeshot at Paddock Hill Bend, but Redding immediately attacked and forced his Ducati underneath the championship leader at Surtees on the opening lap.<\/p>\n Redding attempted to break clear and initially built an advantage of around half a second. Ryde refused to let him escape, however, and gradually reeled the Hager PBM Racing Ducati back in. The timing sheets illustrated just how evenly matched they were: Redding\u2019s fastest lap was a 1m24.557s, only eight-thousandths quicker than Ryde\u2019s 1m24.565s.<\/p>\n By lap 14, the margin was down to a tenth of a second. Ryde made his move one lap later, committing to the inside of Redding at Paddock Hill Bend and taking the lead with the title rivals apparently set for a tense finish.<\/p>\n That showdown was cut short when Eugene McManus crashed heavily on the approach to Paddock Hill Bend with two laps remaining. The race was red-flagged and the result declared, giving Ryde victory by 0.347s. McManus remained conscious while being assessed and stabilised at the circuit before being transferred to hospital, with the initial medical bulletin reporting suspected fractures to his right shoulder blade, right arm and left leg.<\/p>\n Cook was already clear of the large group behind and secured third, giving bimota another BSB podium. Haslam prevailed in a five-rider contest for fourth, holding off Iddon, Ryan Vickers, Glenn Irwin and Ray. Skinner and Lee Jackson completed the top ten.<\/p>\n Brookes worked forward from 16th to 11th in the official classification, narrowly missing a top-ten finish. Kerr<\/p>\n Hon<\/p>\n \u2013<\/p>\n Superbike Race Two<\/p>\n Scott Redding earned pole for Sunday\u2019s opening 12-lap race through his fastest lap from Race One, with Kyle Ryde alongside and Max Cook completing another familiar front row.<\/p>\n Cook made the best launch and swept into the lead while Ryde lost ground away from the line. The reigning champion recovered immediately, forcing his way back to third with an assertive move at Druids during the opening sequence of corners.<\/p>\n Ryde and Redding then exchanged attacks as they disputed second behind Cook. Ryde eventually repelled Redding and set off after the bimota, taking the lead with a move at Graham Hill Bend.<\/p>\n Once in clear air, Ryde produced the defining pace of the race. His 1m24.066s fourth lap lowered the existing Brands Hatch race record by four-tenths of a second and gave him the breathing space needed while Redding remained caught behind Cook.<\/p>\n Redding finally passed Cook on lap eight. Cook attempted to respond, but that battle allowed Ryde to extend his margin and the championship leader crossed the line 2.197s clear. Redding took second, while Cook finished only 0.232s further behind to complete his second podium of the weekend.<\/p>\n Bradley Ray remained within sight of the podium battle and finished fourth. Ryan Vickers won a separate contest with Haslam for fifth, followed by Iddon, Glenn Irwin and Skinner.<\/p>\n Brookes started 14th but continued to make progress as the DAO Racing Honda improved. The Australian recorded a 1m25.093s personal best, passed Joe Talbot late in the race and then drafted past Danny Kent on the run to the chequered flag to snatch 10th.<\/p>\n It was Brookes\u2019 best result of the weekend and came after the team reverted to an earlier set-up while refining the Fireblade\u2019s electronics. Stacey<\/p>\n Duc<\/p>\n 7 Laps<\/p>\n Superbike Race Three<\/p>\n After finishing second twice, Scott Redding approached the weekend finale determined to prevent Kyle Ryde from completing a Brands Hatch hat-trick.<\/p>\n Bradley Ray initially launched into the lead at Paddock Hill Bend, but Redding was in no mood to wait. He attacked at Druids on the opening lap and moved straight to the front, with Ryde and Max Cook again settling into pursuit.<\/p>\n Redding began stretching the field before the Safety Car was deployed following a heavy crash for Australian Brayden Elliott at Stirlings. Elliott was taken to the circuit medical centre, while the intervention erased the leader\u2019s advantage and gave Ryde another opportunity to attack.<\/p>\n Redding controlled the restart cleverly, backing up the field before accelerating away. Ryde remained close and tried everything he could to complete the treble, but was unable to manufacture a decisive opportunity. Redding finally took the flag 0.925s ahead to claim his fourth victory of the season.<\/p>\n Cook completed an exceptionally consistent weekend with his third third-place finish. His 48-point haul elevated him to fifth in the championship and brought him substantially closer to Ray and Haslam in the fight behind the leading pair.<\/p>\n Haslam finished fourth after spending much of the race battling Vickers and Ray. Vickers eventually claimed fifth from Ray, with Glenn Irwin seventh, Skinner eighth, Kent ninth and Talbot completing the top ten.<\/p>\n Lee Jackson brought the DAO Honda home 11th after a tough battle involving Talbot, Kent and O\u2019Halloran. Brookes had started from 11th and was holding that position during the opening lap when an electrical fault forced him to retire.<\/p>\n Ryde\u2019s two victories and second place increased his championship total to 252 points. Redding\u2019s two seconds and a win took him to 233, meaning the defending champion\u2019s advantage grew only slightly, from 17 to 19 points.<\/p>\n Ray holds third on 167 points, but Haslam is now only two points behind. Cook has closed to 151, followed by Skinner on 123 and Vickers on 115. Jackson remains 10th on 76 points, while Brookes is 13th on 68. O\u2019Halloran sits 15th on 45 points and Elliott remains 24th on one point.<\/p>\n For Brookes, the Brands weekend showed signs of improvement without delivering the result he had hoped for. His 11th and 10th in the opening two races demonstrated progress from a difficult Friday, only for the electrical problem to deny him the chance to build on it in the finale.<\/p>\n Josh Brookes<\/p>\n \u201cThe weekend has been a little bit of a work in progress. We can\u2019t expect to be at the front, mixing it around the top five, and we\u2019ve focused more on the top ten. Throughout practice and qualifying we were in that mix, making changes to the bike and trying to find something that works at this circuit.<\/p>\n \u201cThe opening race was okay and we made some good progress. With some fine-tuning to the electronics for the sprint race, it seemed to make a good improvement to the bike and I was nearly half a second quicker.<\/p>\n \u201cI was hoping to capitalise on that in Race Three, but unfortunately we had an electrical issue and I was forced to retire. Irwin<\/p>\n Duc<\/p>\n 1<\/p>\n Quattro British Supersport British Supersport qualifying produced an all-Australian front row, with Ben Currie edging Oli Bayliss to pole by just nine-thousandths of a second.<\/p>\n Currie stopped the clock at 1m27.454s aboard the McAMS Yamaha, while Bayliss recorded a 1m27.463s on his first visit to Brands Hatch. Championship leader Luke Stapleford was only 0.044s from pole in third, with Jack Kennedy another eight-thousandths behind in fourth.<\/p>\n Harry Truelove and Dean Harrison completed the second row. Billy McConnell qualified 11th, Jack Mahaffy was 18th, and Supersport Cup contender Cam Swain started 22nd overall.<\/p>\n Supersport Race One \u2013 Sprint<\/p>\n Currie made full use of pole and led the field away, while Stapleford ran wide at Druids and tumbled as far as seventh. Bayliss briefly occupied second before Kennedy came past on lap two and then relieved Currie of the lead.<\/p>\n Currie fought back to regain first place by lap four, creating a three-rider contest between the two Australians and Kennedy. Bayliss then passed both rivals and moved into the lead, although he was unable to make a clean break.<\/p>\n A moment for Bayliss on lap eight gave Kennedy another opportunity and the Honda rider moved back ahead. Kennedy remained in front until lap ten, when Bayliss reclaimed the position and immediately produced two rapid laps to open a small but decisive margin.<\/p>\n Bayliss crossed the line 0.390s ahead, claiming his third British Supersport victory in only his third race weekend in the series.<\/p>\n Kennedy had no margin for error behind him. Currie attacked through the final corners and the pair arrived at the line together, with Kennedy retaining second by only 0.010s. Currie\u2019s third place nevertheless delivered valuable points on a day when championship leader Stapleford finished further down the order.<\/p>\n Truelove finished fourth and Carter Brown fifth, while Cam Swain took the Supersport Cup victory from Adam Hartgrove and James Alderson. Claridge<\/p>\n SSP<\/p>\n Yam<\/p>\n NS<\/p>\n Supersport Race Two (Feature)<\/p>\n Bayliss\u2019 fastest lap in the Sprint put the Macadam Triumph on pole for Sunday\u2019s 18-lap Feature Race, with Currie and Kennedy completing the front row.<\/p>\n Currie again made the strongest start and led into Paddock Hill Bend, but Bayliss wasted little time moving ahead. The Australian\u2019s initial spell at the front ended when a small mistake on lap four dropped him to third behind Kennedy and Currie.<\/p>\n The opening phase produced a nine-rider lead group before it briefly split and then reformed as a seven-bike train. Kennedy passed Currie to take the lead, while Bayliss regrouped and began working his way forward again.<\/p>\n Bayliss passed Currie on lap nine and returned to the front on lap 12. The order remained anything but settled: Stapleford attacked and led on lap 15, before Kennedy passed both Stapleford and Bayliss to take over one lap later.<\/p>\n With two laps remaining, Bayliss sent the Triumph underneath Kennedy at Sheene Curve. Kennedy remained attached and was handed another chance when Bayliss ran wide at Druids on the final lap, allowing the Honda back into the lead.<\/p>\n Bayliss responded almost immediately, diving back underneath Kennedy and holding his line through the remaining corners. He crossed the line 0.460s ahead to complete his first British Supersport double.<\/p>\n It was also Bayliss\u2019 third consecutive victory and his fourth win from six British Supersport starts since joining the championship. His ability to recover repeatedly after being shuffled down the order was every bit as impressive as his raw speed.<\/p>\n Kennedy finished second for the second time that weekend, with Stapleford only 0.245s further behind in third. Currie recovered from a mid-race mistake to finish fourth, just 0.049s behind Stapleford, while Truelove completed a leading group covered by only 1.187s.<\/p>\n Jack Mahaffy\u2019s race ended with a fall at Surtees, with the official timing report noting that the Australian rider was okay. Cam Swain finished second in the Supersport Cup contest, adding another substantial points haul to his weekend.<\/p>\n Stapleford continues to lead the championship on 214 points, but Currie remains firmly in contention on 184. Kennedy is third on 170, ahead of Dean Harrison on 154.<\/p>\n Bayliss has now climbed to fifth on 142 points.
